Hi MobileRead!
I've never had an eBook before but I think it's about time that I get one. There are lots of books which I like that are available for free in PDF format, but I don't like reading from a computer screen, it hurts my eyes. I read lots of books and I think that an eBook would be helpful for me. I did some research but I really have no idea which one is best. I don't need anything fancy, just something that will let me read plain text. I don't really know about all the different file formats, but I'd like to be able to read PDFs as well as being able to save money by buying digital books instead of physical ones. Also note that I'm willing to buy used or refurbished eBooks. The name of the game here is frugal and functional. ![]() |

I spent quite some time doing research before buying my first one a year ago - kobo, nook, kindle, etc. I settled on the Cybook Odyssey Frontlight HD. Liked it so much that I bought a second one. Never regretted it.

It all depends where you are and what's available there. Is there anything in adds in your country? You can pick non lighted ereader cheap, and they are all pretty good. It depends on what your preferences are. Nook ST used to be discounted, and that was new. |

Their website doesn't seem to be working for me. What is the price of one, and where can I buy one?

I don't think there is anything from the two big companies (Amazon & Kobo) that doesn't have touch screen tech.
If you are looking for just a basic no-frills eReader, I would suggest either the Kobo Touch or Amazon Kindle (the model that is selling for $79) Personally, I would suggest either the Kindle Paperwhite, Kobo Glo or Kobo Aura. The other offerings from those two companies tend to get rather expensive. Last edited by mr_nihilism; 09-19-2014 at 12:40 PM. |

http://www.kobo.com/devices/kobo-touch-refurb-1.html That seems like a good deal to me. And I'm thinking it might be worth it to pitch in the extra $30 to get the Kobo Glo Last edited by surangama; 09-19-2014 at 12:56 PM. |

Ok, I'm looking at the refurbished Kobo Glo, but it says that "A USB charger cable is not included with this refurbished Kobo eReader."
I can't find where on the site to buy a USB charger cable. http://www.kobo.com/kobo-glo-refurb-1.html Will this come with some sort of charging cable, or does it need to be purchased seperately? |

Also since it's Canada, local library probably has ebooks.

I think I'm pretty much sold on the refurbished Kobo Glo, unless anyone has other suggestions.

The Kindle PaperWhite is a good reader as well. The one downside from some people's points of view is that epubs can't be read as is on it. Calibre is your friend there along with Apprentice Alf (whom you have to google as detailed discussion of how to remove DRM is verboten here at MR). I've had one for about two yrs and have never had any trouble with it.

Worth noting that since you live in Canada, if you plan on checking out library books you must avoid the Kindle.
OverDrive does not offer Kindle checkouts outside the US. |
