Would you take your e-reader to the beach?
Well I am heading out for vacation, kind of, tomorrow morning, and for the days I am away I plan on enjoying two miles of white sand beach, lapped by water with a visibility of 200 feet.
![]() Now, every time I go to the beach, I wonder if it's really such a smart idea to take my Sony Reader along with me. Sand, sun and heat - this sounds like a potential death cocktail for e-book readers, don't you think? The only protective cover I got is the original leather case that came with the Reader (well, and the backpack I use to carry it). |

On the Kindle forum, there is a waterproof bag that they are touting as the best thing since squeezed cheese in a can. It's called the DryPak bag, available on Amazon. That looks like the only way that I would ever go to such a hostile environment with my reader.

Try a large ziplock storage bag. As long as you're not taking it in the water, you should get plenty of protection and it's pliable enough to push buttons.
Enjoy yourself! |

Uhm, I should try, I think I have a ziplock bag somewhere at home. It sure must look strange holding a ziplock bag in front of your eyes for hours

Not as strange as a bibliophile going into withdrawal, from having nothing to read for four hours. I was going to suggest a gallon sized zip lock bag too.

I took mine to the beach in a Ziploc gallon bag. Press all the air out so that it is form-fitting. I kept it in the "dry" part of the cooler when I was playing in the surf, just to be sure no water could get it.
BONUS: The little bit of air stil in the bag will help keep it afloat, should some drunken catastrophe occur. |

I have already taken my 505 to the beach. I put it in my bag when I wasn't using it. I did not have a single issue at all. Didn't need some protective cover for it either.

What about manipulating it with hands greasy with the sun screen? Reading under a hot sun, can it damage it? |

I got the MEdge Leisure cover just for things like the beach. It has a clear plastic front cover through which you can easily push the keys and it is zipper enclosed. Seems ideal for the beach or boating.
Where are you headed? |

Screw the sharks and killer whales! It's those little sand crabs that you can't quite see that you have to worry about. They'll strip a body and bury the bones in about ten seconds!

White sand beach? You know, I can't read in certain environments or states of mind. This qualifies as one of them. Leave the Reader in the room.
