I Took The Plunge

What am I doing over here on the Pocket PC side of the world??
Well, I took the plunge into the dark side!

I just bought a Toshiba e405 off www.woot.com for $149.99 + $5 s/h. I think it's reconditioned, the battery life is only 3-4hrs, and I don't even know if that's the best price out there. Plus Alex is right about Toshiba leaving the PDA market. But hey, even so, it's a relatively easy and cheap way to find out what all this PPC talk is about. Who knows... I might even like the dark side.

I did hear you can get older Dells pretty cheap also, but I'm the sort of guy that may wait 6mos to buy something till something strikes my fancy and then BOOM!... it looks like an impulse buy. (Last nite, before I saw the woot item, I had decided to buy a T5. Oh well, sorry Palm... but I'll be back.)

I already have a 1gig SD card I was planning to use with a T5, which will get good use with this PDA now. Bottom line is that will give me a chance to play with PPC because PalmOne is not impressing me with the T5 bugs, slow adoption of Cobalt OS6 (although that seems to be PalmSource's fault) and their focus on smartphones. This experiment will hold me over while there's a lull in the action until PalmOne fixes the T5 bugs and the Cobalt PDAs are being readied for market by PalmOne and Tapwave. If nothing else, it will at least solve my mp3 player needs for a while.

I'm not looking forward to the learning curve though... I don't have as much time for this sort of thing as I did in my younger days

Craig, maybe you can give me some tips and even help me understand game emulation. (Mind a few PMs every now and then?)

And because I plan to go back to Palm next year, I'm going to be trying to survive on almost freeware exclusively. We'll see if that works.

BTW, I'm not really a convert, at least for now I really still like Palm. But you never know...

Bob, please post about your experiences. I am in the same boat, thinking of given PPC a first try.

Welcome to the Dark Side! *evil grin*
I have been on the Palm side of the fence, and I've been on the Pocket PC side of the fence, and honestly, I like it better over here with my trusty Pocket PC. You never know, you could become a convert for life!
If you're planning on operating exclusively on freeware, what kind of programs are you looking for? I might be able to offer some advice on good freeware to use.

You may be sorry you asked, but that would be very helpful. The next couple of days I'm going to sit down with my Clie and try to figure out what I "really" need. I.e. not the fun stuff and fluff, but the capabilities that I rely on.

But this should be a pretty complete list of my essentials:

[1] A nice looking 1-wk view like DateBk5, with the 7 boxes for the days, and tiny text in each box with the time and description of each apptmt, plus capability to click on the day to get a day view or click on the apptmt and get the full information about it. The ones I've seen screenshots for have big fonts and look more cartoonish than serious. (Even though I don't expect to stay with PPC, I'd pay for this feature for temporary use.)

[2] A nice outliner to replace ShadowPlan that has one-click note viewing for items, and allows you to easily move items to another outline. Also need to be able to mix both checkbox todo items and text note items without checkboxes. (I'd pay a little for this feature, too.)

[3] A Flash card mounting program (to mount the flash card as an external drive on my desktop). If I can't find this, I'll need to buy a separate hardware card reader to attach to my PC.

[4] A password vault with decent encryption and ability to import/export/cut/paste from text somehow. And a related question... is there an emulator I can run on the desktop like for Palm? I use that as a backup in case I break my Palm, so I can still get to my passwords by running the emulator. If not, I'd need a password program that has a desktop companion.

[5] A shopping list program like HandyShopper that allows repeatable checklists and stores a reference list of items for inclusion in the "needed" list. Also would like it to have notes allowed for each item and alpha sort, or at least a sort by category. (I use it for grocery lists, and the category is a short abbreviation that indicates the section of the store. Then the sorted list is in the same order I pass thru the store.)

[6] Klondike Solitaire Game

[7] Freeware Bible (KJV is fine)

[8] Calculator -- This comes with it, doesn't it? As well as a simple todo list, calendar and memo app?

[9] Dictionary

[10] File manager

And a couple questions:

* Do I need a utility to close an app instead of hide it? I've heard that you can't actually stop an app from executing by clicking the close x. Is there another way to stop the app?

* Are there any other PPC-type utilities that I just really ought to have? Surely there must be some famous ones that everyone uses.

I may have left something out, but those programs together with stuff I think is easy to find (like AvantGo, iSilo, eReader, MSReader, MP3 player, Acrobat Reader, etc) should be pretty close to making me fully equipped. Except for things I may have forgotten, everything else I have on my Palm is really "fluff".

Thanks, Divajess, for whatever suggestions you have with regard to any portion of this. Anyone else with some ideas for me also??
(Hey, I might even have a game plan before the PPC arrives!)

(I apologize ahead of time if this is disjointed...I am at work, so my attention isn't on everything 100%!! )

Well the first place you are going to want to start for freeware is this site right here:
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php

There is SO MUCH STUFF on that site you may never pay for much software again! Also try freewareppc.com (there will likely be a lot of overlap between the sites but sometimes looking on both is helpful!).

As far as a Calendar program, I am addicted to Pocket Informant. I have tried both Agenda Fusion and Pocket Informant (the leaders in PIM for PPC) and I love PI. It has a great weekly view, really configurable with different styles, etc. I cannot express my love of Pocket Informant enough.

There is a HandyShopper in development for Pocket PC! Go here for the alpha download...http://chrisant.home.comcast.net/hs3/hs3ppc.htm

As far as a listmaking/outlining program, I highly recommend and suggest ListPro. It's worth every penny for how incredibly cool it is. You can pretty much do anything with ListPro. It has a PC version as well...I also like PhatNotes-type programs for storing tasks, todo's, notes, etc. all in one place. A good piece of freeware is BizOrg http://www.bizon.org/bizorg Noterriffic is also good, and has a desktop component as well. http://www.freewareppc.com/database/noterrific.shtml

BitsInside is a good Explorer program (Resco Explorer is the best, but not free) http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities...explorer.shtml. Total Commander is also great. http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities...ommander.shtml

Check out Pocket e-Sword for all your Bible needs...it rocks! http://www.e-sword.net/pocketpc/

You are going to want to invest in a card reader--seriously, the difference is amazing when writing files that don't have to go through Activesync.

RE: Closing an app, there are a number of utilities out there to download that let you actually close a program with the X. I highly recommend SPB Pocket Plus, which also gives you cool stuff for your Today screen, etc. It's an awesome program. But if you don't want to invest (which I understand) there are lots of free utilities out there...PocketPCFreewares will guide you in the right direction. So will I, if I can remember all the cool stuff I've downloaded for myself.

Hope I have helped some. I'll write more later when I'm at home.

Divajess,
I'm indebted to you for the fantastic information. You've saved me countless hours, I'm sure. And I can't wait to get that little Toshiba in my hands now. If only I had splurged for next day shipping....

But this time of waiting for delivery will be a great chance to take a quick look at web sites and reviews for the programs you've listed. Fortunately, they probably offer demos like the PalmOS world, so I can try them out when my pda arrives.

How does software copy protection work in the PPC world? Are they also protected by tying the registration key to a single user name like Palm programs are?

I look forward to all your input whenever you have opportunity, and I'm sure I'll have more questions also. For those who are in the same position as me, like TadW, I'll try to make this like a mini-blog to keep people up-to-date with my experiences. I'll be honest about what happens, but I feel a bit sad, too... I don't want to influence too many people toward PPC. Palm is a great platform, and PPC is better because of the competition also

Have a look at my other thread for what I've got installed on my PPC, that will give you an idea of some free (and not so free) software that may interest you - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2246

I just use the inbuilt scheduler. I like it, but would like to see the alarm work a little better. Divajess would know a lot more that me, I guarantee!

I use Activesync to copy my files. It's not too shabby, but you have to remember to copy and paste files, dragging doesn't work. Of course, card readers are a cheap alternative.

I use Codewallet Pro, which is secure and feature rich, but not free. There are some freeware programs available, and I tried a few, but none came close to this. Download and give the trial a go, and you'll see what I mean.

Divajess already mentioned the Handyshopper port. I didn't know about that, thanks for the heads up Jess!

It's just a basic calculator. I use Calc98, which is much better, and free.

Like Jess says, there are a few options (and you'll need one of them). One she missed was Magic Button, now at v 1.7, which is small, free and does the job nicely. So does Wizbar Advance, which also lets you skin your desktop.

Media programs to watch mpg, divx, and a better MP3 player are things you might be interested in. PocketTV, PocketMVP, Todayplayer are free options you might want to check out (sorry I don't have urls handy, but googling the above will find them quickly)

PocketRAR is a good one too, if you want to conserve space and access rar and zip archives on the ppc.

We can talk about emulators in another post, I think. There's a lot of stuff you can emulate, and several options available to you

Great stuff Craig. I'm keeping track and will do a lot of trials to see what works for me. I can't keep up with all the details I'm sure, but I'll definitely let everyone know what comes of it all. I know this thread is going to be interesting to a lot of people.
I'm already a lot more excited than when I first put in the order. In fact I can't wait to get started!

Really? I have always been able to drag files while copying. That's weird.

Activesync works well enough for almost everything, but if you're wanting to do stuff like copy a whole album of mp3s from your computer to your memory card, it'll go 10x faster with a card reader. I used to be able to do that when my card reader worked.

Oh I forgot to mention Magic Button...I had it in mind. It is free, but I actually prefer other programs over it because I just don't like the way it performs. Wisbar Advance is great, but it froze up my 1910...and the new version is a paid version. I love SPB programs...their Finance program is great, and in my mind, Pocket Plus just can't be beat.

Bob, I'm in the same boat as you--waiting on my new PPC. My Dell should arrive today, but I may have to chase it down since I won't be there to sign for it. I was anticipating an extra 2 week wait for it to ship, though, so having to go to the FedEx location is not that big of a deal for me. I'm just grateful it shipped only ONE day late!

I've been checking out a lot of extra programs I've always bypassed before, because now I will have Windows Mobile 2003 AND wireless/bluetooth connectivity.

I'm making a big list of software...I'm sure I'll be back to this thread with more advice.

I can drag from the SD card to anywhere else, but not from, asy, my HD to the card. I need to copy and paste it...

I've gone and made a cup of coffee while waiting for a bunch of MP3's to copy across, so maybe a dedicated card reader isn't such a bad idea.

Wizbar advance locks up my 1930 as well, eventually, so I use Magic button exclusively now. I miss the skinning, though.

When I'm done marveling over my beautiful little Dell, I will be sure and provide an even more extensive list of things that will be a must-install. We're still in the bonding stage! Bob, can you go over exactly what you will do/want to do with Your PPC? I know you have gone over some of it already, but that will help me even more. :-)
