Brand New Kobo Aura HD Stuck on First Screen?
Hello there,
Now, I've done a little searching, but I have yet to find a concrete answer. My Kobo refuses to move past the initial screen telling me to plug it into a computer (this one here) and it shows no real indication of charging. I have tried plugging it into my computer as well as a wall adapter. I have tried different micro USB cords. I have tried holding the power switch for varying lengths of time. And I have tried a reset using a paper clip. No change at all whatsoever. When I plug it in or hold the switch for a few seconds the white power light turns on for a few seconds and then goes out. Is this normal? It doesn't seem like it is. And if it is, there isn't any documentation that I could find that indicates it is. Should I just let it sit plugged in for awhile and then try turning it on after that? I mean, that's inevitably what I'm going to do. I just want to know if anyone else out there has any information I'm missing. Any responses are appreciated. EDIT: I've noticed now that the power light will actually stay on now while it is plugged in. Holding the power switch turns it off. Holding it again turns it back on. Still no change in the screen. Your edit confirms your Kobo needs charging. I would charge it for 3 hours or more. Do you have kobo desktop program installed on your computer?

Well. I guess I'm just impatient. I ended up taking it in and after they tried everything that I did they opened a new one which responded right away and they gave that one to me as an exchange. I had charged the Kobo for probably an hour and a half, which I would assume would be enough to have it at least turn on for a moment or change the screen in some way, shape, or form.
Yes, I do have the desktop software. Which I just used to set up my new Kobo. And after ejecting this one it proceeded to say that it was updating, then the screen flashed black before going blank. I have it plugged in right now. This one will not show me the power light while it is plugged in at all. However, as soon as I unplug it the light turns on, but that's it. Now maybe it's just me, but it isn't obvious at all what is supposed to be happening or whether this is all usual behaviour. If it would just say somewhere in the manual or on the website or in any of the places that I've looked that this is normal and that I just need to let it charge for three hours or so, then I would be perfectly content with letting it sit and charge for three hours. But as it stands, while letting it charge seems to be the only recommended course, it's still a little frustrating that it isn't made clear that this will almost certainly clear up my issues. I'm sorry for the little rant and the huge blocks of text; I'm a little irritable today. Just a question. When plugged in, if the screen is blank and won't turn on, but resetting it causes it to flash black briefly (same as if I unplug it and hold the power switch until the light goes out and then plug it back in), should the power light be on? How am I supposed to know whether or not it's actually charging at this point? Because the light is not on and will not stay on while plugged in. Unless I unplug it, hold the power until the light goes out, then hold the power again until the screen flashes and then plug it back in. I don't understand the behaviour of this device. EDIT: Forgive my impatience. I will be letting it charge for the next three and a half hours or so before I head off to work. I have a feeling that all will be fine by that point. Either way I'll come back and give an update. Last edited by brdigetrlol; 09-12-2014 at 05:04 PM. |

Was the original one a truly new device, all the packaging, including the screen protector etc? Makes me wonder if it was a return or something. They should come around half charged when new, not with dead batteries.

Yes, Li-Ion batteries should have some charge in them when you get them. If the charge level gets to low, it damages the batteries, they become dangerous and shouldn't be used. As all batteries self-discharge when not being used, a Li-Ion battery will eventually reach this point. This will take a while. The battery or device have a protection circuit to prevent the batter from being use, but, it means that if you ever get a device with a Li-Ion battery in it that has no charge, take it back and get it replaced.

(Edit) One last thing if you are adding a large number of books, it will take some time even hours to process them depending on how many, make sure your reader is plugged in during this time to prevent any problems and potential corruption of the data base if your device shuts down in the middle of it. I have over 5000 books and counting on my sd card and yes it takes some time to process them. regards Jack Last edited by jackastor; 09-15-2014 at 03:41 PM. Reason: after thoughts |
