iPad Pro 12.9 incher
Wish Apple will soon release 13 inch iPad Pro asap. Some competition to Surface Pro 3, Sony DPT-1, PocketBook CAD Reader and possible Onyx 13.3 Reader. Bring it on. There's very little to read in A4/letter format.

I can read A4/letter size pdf on 10" iPad and Kindle DX in landscape mode (two or three screens per page) without problem whatsoever, even getting slight magnification compared to the paper when zoomed-in without margins.
Surface Pro 2 and 3 weigh 900 and 800 gr, iPad Air 480 gr. Last edited by markom; 09-04-2014 at 07:48 PM. |

On of the main reasons that Apple struggled during the Pepsi salesman reign was that they spread out the mac line so much. Since the Apple revival, the thing that Apple has done well is zero in on doing a few things well and not be all things to all people. A 13 inch iPad would have a pretty limited market, IMPO.

Apple tends to design their products with features focused on what 90% of their market wants, rather than things that are wanted by a small percentage. |

It has a market, but not the kind of market that is worth chasing after. You WANT the person who will spend $2,000 on the MacBook AND then get the $600+ iPad. You WANT the double sales in both the Mac App Store and iTunes App Store.
The majority of people who currently have both don't want to change. At least the people who don't throw away their money at everything that gets shoved in their face don't. I used to have a Tablet PC. It was a PITA because it used to do phantom touches. I would sit there for ten minutes just watching the screen react to the "touches" I was apparently doing. Now I use a Wacom Intuos and really enjoy it. However, it works well because I have the ExpressionKeys, the buttons on the pen, AND the keyboard. If I had to only rely on a pen and gestures, it'd be a complete nightmare. When I use at least 10 different programs with it, there's no way hat I could ever get efficient with it. I have a Clamcase Pro on my iPad Mini (I'm actually typing this very post on it). I have the jailbreak tweak that lets me attach a trackpad/mouse to it if I need to. Multitasking is going to be great on it (I actually have the OS Experience tweak that I use too), but I don't need it to go farther than that. When I need to get into OS X, I can just VNC into it, it works very well at this small of resolution and screen. 13" is a very, very, very small screen for people who REALLY benefit from pen input too. It's not enough that it's bigger than a piece of paper. Most of the big drawing and 3D apps have these crazy interfaces that take a good chunk of the screen. The better resolution helps of course, but still. |

![]() IMO, or I should say in my experience (IME), touchscreen tablets and smartphones are very good for BROWSING information, but they are lousy for WRITING information. I love my tablets and iPhone for looking up things, for reading books, magazines, articles, websites, et cetera, but hate them for entering anything the requires a keypad. On screen keypads are awkward to use and give no tactile response. For those of us old enough to have used desktop and laptop computers for 25+ years, having to use an on screen keypad that is in the same geometrical plane as the screen and takes up half of the screen's real estate, well it isn't natural to us at all. It is awkward, inconvenient, and downright physically uncomfortable to do. As a result, I personally find that entering text and numbers via an on screen keypad takes me several times as long as it would on a desktop or laptop computer style of keyboard. As a result, if I need to add a lot of text/numbers, and I'm using a tablet or smartphone, I'm going to connect an external keyboard. And even then it still sucks because you have to continuously move your hand from external keyboard to tablet/smartphone screen. Bottom line for me is this, for heavy duty text/number entry I'm turning off the tablet/smartphone and using my laptop. Why? because computers were designed and refined over decades to be data entry friendly, and they are much more so than a tablet/smartphone. So IME tablets/smartphones are great and often preferred for data and information retrieval and browsing, but they suck at data entry. Even a tablet/smartphone with externally connected keyboard and mouse suck at data entry. A desktop/laptop will result in many times more data entry being accomplished than on a tablet/smartphone. So a 13" iPad with keyboard is totally uninteresting to me. I prefer my little iPad mini Retina and a laptop. |

My dad brought out the Tablet PC today. It took me like 5 hours to get the newer drivers on there. I still think that it's not a great experience for full blown desktop apps. My hand hurts like heck after using it for 12 hours straight too.
It was frying my lap too. ![]() No, I definitely still prefer a small Intuos to that. |

This really does seem to be the direction that Apple is going in. The new versions of the OS for both the mac and iOS are all about easily passing data between the iOS device and the laptop/desktop device on the fly. It's actually pretty cool. An example would be working on a document on my laptop, then passing it to my iPad and carry my iPad to a meeting with the document. You, of course, can already do this, but the new OS makes it easy and seamless. It's very, very slick. |

I have a Surface Pro and find that the combination of touchscreen and keyboard works well. I use the keyboard/touchpad for tasks that need precision, and the touchscreen for things like scrolling through a web page, or tapping a button.

I think that if Apple can incorporate a stylus that would change how the ipad could work. Right now it sucks to write directly on the ipad. In 2000, my compaq ipaq did this just great using a stylus.

I think Apple had their stylus moment with the Newton (I use to have one around somewhere). About 7 or 8 years ago, I used a windows tablet with a stylus. I used it as an ebook reader and note taker. Trying to get the stylus text into a normal text document was what I like to call dancing bear software (the wonder isn't how well it dances, but that it dances at all). It worked well enough for a couple of years, but Microsoft seemed to abandon that particular tablet software along the way.

For those who hate onscreen keyboards as much as I do, there are very accessible alternatives. I'm using a Logitech Ultraslim case, but its pretty awkward for mobile use. I think for my next ipad, it will be a clam case.

I highly recommend the Clamcase. It's a beauty to type on.

Does anyone know of a really good keyboard case which either flips comfortably back to use the iPad in a tablet mode (eg standing up making a speech, etc), or which it's very quick and easy to remove the iPad from multiple times a day (less preferred option)? It's ok if the keyboard's small, but it shouldn't have too bizarre a layout. iPad 4, kid going to high school next year.
Right now I'm thinking of just sending him with his current case, which is a good one with 360 spin and adjustable tilt, and a separate Apple Bluetooth keyboard which I have lying around. He's interested in a folio keyboard case, but much perusal of review sites leaves me pretty unsatisfied with the current options that I can find. |
