Metadata keeps reappearing

Maybe the question is already answered somewhere, but I don't know the proper search terms to find the solution. So any pointer is very much appreciated.

I have a small problem: I have 6 Books of a series. The first 4 appear on my kindle in the format:

<number> - <title>

The other 2 appear without a number. They are displayed as

<Author> - <seriesname> - <title>

I investigated a bit and it seems, the metadata on the first 4 in the mobi file is properly set as defined in calibre. The metadata on the last 2 is completely different. In fact there the title is set as it appears on my kindle.

It seems, when I change the metadata in calibre, this is not reflected in the book's file, so the Kindle will continue displaying different metadata.

Is there any way I can make calibre but my corrected metadata into the files?

After setting the metadata correctly in Calibre, have you tried deleting the book from the Kindle and then resending the corrected book? I think this is necessary to get the Kindle to recognize the change.

Yes, I did so.

You know what made me think that the data is in the file? If you go to the "Edit Metadata" dialog, select one of the book files (I had epub and mobi), and click the "(i)" button, the displayed metadata changes. I think it changes to what's in the file.

It appears my observations are correct

Quote:
In terms of Calibre changing the file, it can't (AFAIK) alter DRM'd amazon ebook files. It definitely can change metadata in non-DRM'd files from other sources. The key is re-converting the file once you make changes, even if you are just converting mobi to mobi. Then any changes you make will show up on your Kindle when you send over the file.

If I add a .mobi from FeedBooks or wherever and I change the cover, then I have to re-convert the file to get those changes to "stick" and change the actual file. Nothing changes in the actual ebook unless you re-convert.

Hope that makes sense - happy to clarify further. I use Calibre a lot!

They are wrong.

No reconversion is necessary.

However, IIRC calibre cannot update metadata in a dual MOBI -- those need to be reconverted.

So no reconversion is required exept for mobi where they are required? So what was wrong with my observation?

Anyhow: I did a reconvert of the mobi file (mobi to mobi) and it shrunk from 4MB to 700kb (or so). Now I feel extremely unsure about what could have been lost in the conversion process.

Dual MOBI is a .mobi tht contains both mobi7 and KF8 in one wrapper. You typically get them when using Kindlegen -- Amazon uses it as a master format and splits off the part your Kindle supports, when you buy and download a book. calibre can create them, but not by default. A reconversion should fix them by turning them into a regular .mobi
