Calibre 2.0 Edit Metadata page won't close.

Since updating to 2.0 I've added 10 entries and twice when editing the metadata the page would freeze up when I tried to close it. My changes would be saved, but I'd have to close and restart the program to get the edit metadata window to close.

Let me guess? XP

I have seen this. it is an mostly dead orphan that will go away if you quit Calibre.

I run multi-head displays so I moved it off to the side and opened the next book.
Sometimes it heals itself, other times you need to quit Calibre (just push to the side so you can focus the main GUI and ctrl-Q

No, I'm using Windows 7 actually.

Yeah I guess I can try moving the window off to the side, but I'm hoping this eventually gets fixed. I never had this problem before in any previous versions of Calibre.

I had it pop up a few times in 1.4x versions.
Never nailed down the trigger event I could go days without it happening, then Bang, 3 times in a day

I'm afraid I am at a loss as far as this one is concerned. I cannot reproduce it. What might help is running calibre in debug mode (right click the preferences button) and post the debug log after a freeze occurs, it might contain something useful.

Also, just to be cleqar, only the edit metadata dialog freezes, not the rest of the application? That is, after the freeze, if you move aside the dialog can you continue using calibre?

@Kythe42 - Maybe there's something in Qt5 that's incompatible with something you already have

So I also suggest that you disable/terminate any gadgets, particularly any that enhance the user interface.

I use something called Actual Title Buttons, for reasons I won't go into here I had to exclude the Preference windows from its operation. I did the exclusions years ago when I started using calibre.

This has happened to me with 2.0 running on a brand new HP ENVY running Win 8.1.
I have no plug-ins installed.

@kovidgoyal

I haven't had the opportunity to try moving the window to the side so I can't really say. I plan to try this the next time it happens. I seem to recall being able to click on things that were visible behind the metadata window though. I will try the debug thing if it happens again. Unfortunately I can't seem to make it happen by opening up the metadata dialog on random books and then clicking ok.

This happened after I added 10 empty book entries and the bug occurred only 2 times out of 10 after editing the metadata and clicking ok.

I won't be able to do anything more unless it turns up again. I have a feeling that it probably won't happen unless I'm actually making changes which it needs to save. It seemed to freeze up when saving the changes, and then the changes did get saved, but the window just wouldn't close after.

I will provide more information when/if this happens again.

@BetterRed

I don't actually have any plugins that enhance the user interface on Calibre.

The only plugins I have installed are EpubMerge, EpubSplit, KindleUnpack, Search The Internet, and DeDrm. All of these are plugins that just sit there doing nothing unless you specifically use them, so I'm not sure how they could effect the metadata dialog window.

If you meant software that enhances the Windows interface in general, the only thing I have installed is something called Taskbar Tweaker which lets me disable those annoying little thumbnail images that popup when you hover over a program on the taskbar because the Microsoft gods didn't see fit to include a disable option.

I have also had this occur a couple of times since the 2.0 upgrade on my windows 8 (64-bit) system. I am running the 32-bit Portable version of Calibre.

If I move the Window aside then I can continue using calibre. The orphan Window(s) will not disappear until I exit Calibre. Unfortunately I cannot seem to reproduce it at will which makes gathering diagnostics a little harder.

I remember it used to happen in much earlier versions (0.x series) of Calibre with some frequency. However at some point changes meant that it stopped happening. I have not seen it for some time now until this 2.0 release.

I suggest running calibre in debug mode all the time, then when it happens post the debug log.

@Kythe42 - Yep, Windows gadgets. However I doubt very much that it's Taskbar Tweaker. I first installed it when I was on Win7 beta 2, for similar reasons as yourself - couldn't live without it.

"Calibre 2.0 Edit Metadata page won't close." This has just happened to me. Windows 7 64 bit.

Installed latest Alf's Tools. Restarted Calibre. Edit metadata. Download metadata. OK. Long pause, and then Edit Metadata windows is blank (except for title bar) and will not close. The rest of Calibre is still functioning - I could click Edit metadata again and open another metadata window. Unfortunately I was not running in debug mode and cannot repro.

Is there a way to make it run debug mode automatically or do you have to restart in debug mode every time you load the program?

Use

calibre-debug -g

in a command prompt to run calibre (you can make a windows shortcut for it if you prefer)

I occasionally have this issue as well but I've found that by using the dash at the top of the screen to minimize Calibre and then bringing it up from the taskbar again the frozen metadata screen is gone.

No clue what causes it though.
