Okay, it's charging...now what?

Hello everyone!!

My Sony Reader just arrived. Yippee!! It's beautiful!!

I plugged it into my laptop and it's now charging.

What happens next?

How long does it take to charge?

When can I start shopping for ebooks?

When do I load the software?

I got questions!

Hi GypsyWoman. If you're using the USB cable to charge the Sony, it takes about four hours for a full charge although you can start downloading books sooner that that. In fact, you can download books to your Reader Library on your PC now as long as you've loaded your software then transfer them to your Sony Reader after it's charged up. I seem to recall I charged mine up for about two hours before I started transferring books over.

If you don't have one, you might consider getting the AC adapter plug. This will charge your reader up to teh max in about two hours and you can read books while you're doing it.

You can load the software now & start shopping. With the SW loaded on your laptop, you can actually start reading on it if you just can't wait for the Sony to charge.

It's been a long while since I initially charged my Sony so I won't go there. But when it's charged you can use the Sony SW to transfer books to the reader.

Hi,

I did order an AC adapter but it's not here yet, it's 'out for delivery' right now. SO I have to rely on the laptop to charge it.

I didn't load the software yet. I guess I can do that now.

Thanks for the info!

Have a good one!

Also, don't forget to check the content here on the forums. There is a great collection of classics available. Using Calibre will also give you the ability to download great news content such as The New York Times and other papers/periodicals. The NYT is a full edition of the daily paper.

P.S. Where in PA are you located? I grew up in Pennsylvania and still have family there.

Hi,

Oh good, I can't wait to shopping for some ebooks. I'll load my software now so I can buy a few ebooks now.

Where does everyone usually buy their books? Sony or other on-line site?

Thanks for the help, I sure can use it.

Take care!

GypsyWoman, I buy most of my books from Sony although have also bought several from Fictionwise (http://www.fictionwise.com/servlet/m...url=/home.html)

Also, go here (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11052) for a list of Sony compatible books beyond the Sony site.

Hi,

What is Calibre? I have seen that word around but I don't know what it is exactly. Is it something to do with loading non Sony ebooks?

I live in a little township north of Pittsburgh, Richland Township. Where do you live now?

Hi,

I started looking around and found a few free books here this morning. I have never heard of some of them so I looked them up on Amazon for a description before I downloaded them to my laptop.

There really is quite a lot here.

Thanks for posting the links for me. I appreciate it!

I see I have a lot of browsing to do. At least it's fun browsing and not work related browsing, lol!

I haven't bought any books from Sony. Actually the only thing I've bought from that store is 3 gift cards for non-US members here.

That said, most all of the books I bought from sony I got from scifi-az.com. He has Sony formated PDFs... and I've been working with Michael the last few days via email to make sure he supports Kindle and has native BBeB (lrf) for Sony readers. If you like SciFi check out his books. I have read the first two Gibraltar Stars series books, the Makers series and the Antaries series.

I also have an account at Fictionwise.com... I didn't buy one book there. All there "multiformat" books have an .lrf for Sony that you can get. But, if you buy protected books your best bet is to get the MS Reader format and remove DRM and convert... but that does take some software installs and work. not hard, just stuff to do.

But, if you find stuff at the Sony store that you want to read and the price isn't much higher than fictionwise or other places....

Whew!! I can see I have a lot to learn, wow! Maybe I'll stick with loading BBeB for a while.

I like SciFi a lot. My favorites are horror and mystery.

I think I'll start keeping notes until I get the hang of this thing.

I can recommend Cory Doctorow's _Little Brother_. It is one of his newest books, but he released it under the Creative Commons license so it is in the eBook section here at mobilread in Sony/LRF format. I am only a chapter in and I can tell it's going to be a good one.

Actually, here is a link to it:
