.epub validation error in smashwords - where would you start?
Edited my book in sigil - it has a bunch of images and hyperlinks throughout.
I've managed to weed down the abundance of errors in both WC3 & FlightCrew to zero. Also, no more errors when using this validation tool: http://validator.idpf.org/ However... After I upload to smashwords, it sends me this email: >>We have run EPUBcheck on your file, and unfortunately, It has not passed >>validation. The errors found were: >>'OEBPS / Text /': referenced resource missing in the package (repeats 3 times) No other info! Where would you start hunting for these errors? I've used the offline version of flightcrew, submitted multiple times, and have emailed smashwords (but not prepared to wait idly for a response...) Any help appreciated, thanks ![]() |

Do you sent a Word document or an ePUB to Smashwords? If it is the first, it will be difficult. They have a program called Meatgrinder that destroys you Word document and tries to make a ePUB out of it.
If you sent an ePUB and FlightCrew and the validator online give no warnings, it should be fine structure wise. However, what might be important is knowing which version of the validator Smashwords use. Probably an old version with bugs that were fixed in a later version. The message indicates that there is a problem with a reference. That could be either a bookmark or perhaps in the ncx file. You can try searching for: /Text/" |

I usually only see that error when there are href attributes that are comprised of fragment identifiers with no filename (or something similar). I've seen it happen when doing a lot of splitting/merging in Sigil. Only I've never seen it in epubs that Flightcrew and/or EPUBCheck gives a clean bill of health. Usually ALL validators will bark at that sort of thing... not just some. Are you absolutely sure you're submitting the same file to Smashwords that you're validating with Sigil and the IDPF's online checker?
EDIT: See if anything here helps. Last edited by DiapDealer; 08-04-2014 at 07:56 AM. |

Thread moved to Epub. Not a Sigil specific topic

Except in the sense that Sigil's split/merge feature is often the cause of such an error.
![]() You end up with href="../Text/#id_frag" which is what throws that particular /OEBPS/Text/ error. Never been able to nail down the specific steps to make it happen (I think I've developed unconscious workarounds), but Sigil definitely makes it happen under certain conditions. |

If you are sending an ePub already ready to go to Smashwords, get epubcheck on your end and validate your epub. Fix it until it validates. Don't rely on FlightCrew as it misses a lot of errors. epubcheck 3.0.1 is the current version release version.

Particularly epubcheck follows links to make sure they are valid. Flightcrew does not.

![]() I think the Fragments come from splitting a book that used relative links (valid until the split happens) Another possible case is deleting a file that has links pointing to it, then splitting that ![]() |

Just as I, who repair electronic equipment, is nowhere near as abusive to the equipment as my customers are.
