Send to Kindle App Not Recognizing Proper Title and Author

I use Calibre to manage my ebook library, and usually add documents to my Amazon cloud using the Send to Kindle Application on my MacBook. Up until last night, the Send to Kindle app always recognized the title and author of the book based on the metadata I had entered for it on Calibre.

However, last night I was prompted to update the app. (I think that immediately before I updated, the metadata was recognized, but I'm not certain.) After updating, the title prompt on the App was just the raw file name. The author prompt was the last Author I had typed in manually, rather than relying on the metadata on Calibre. (I know the app had recognized the proper author for other books since I had done this manual edit.)

Here's a hypothetical illustration of what the App used to recognize:

Title: Great Expectations
Author: Dickens, Charles

And here's a hypothetical of how it works now:

Title: Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
Author: Twain, Mark (or whatever I had typed in last)

This is particularly a pain because I use my old lap top to manage my ebooks, and several of the keys have stopped working. So it's a particular hassle having to manually edit each submission I want to make.

There seem to be no options on the app that fix the problem and I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Just joining the chorus that the update seems to have whacked the metadata sensing for me, too.

Does anyone have an old installer to make sure it's on the client side or if something changed on Amazon's side?

How could the send to kindle app possibly know what you typed in in Calibre?

Since it used to work before, I assume they Save To Disk and send that.

Personally, I'd just use the builtin calibre Send To Email...

Send to Kindle doesn't require Calibre.

Because once you convert an ebook using Calibre, the new version reflects your chamges to the original metadata.

That is why you would use Calibre, even though Send to Kindle doesn't require it.

Yeah, however, the built-in option takes an exponentially longer time. Also, I'm having this issue where Gmail isn't allowing Calibre access to my email account, but that's a whole other headache.

  • It will run in the background, so unless it is urgent it gets sent immediately...
  • That is because of a tweak:
    Quote:
    ID: public_smtp_relay_delay

The number of seconds to wait before sending emails when using a
public email server like gmail or hotmail. Default is: 5 minutes
Setting it to lower may cause the server's SPAM controls to kick in,
making email sending fail. Changes will take effect only after a restart of
    calibre.

Dunno why Gmail doesn't like your calibre.

I also prefer Send To Kindle over the Calibre send option, again because it takes forever using Calibre. As for the Send to Kindle problem it's annoying but I can work round it by amending the data before I send it.

I wonder if Amazon knows?

I've tried to tell Amazon but as I have an issue with them over my @kindle.com address not working properly they are getting them mixed up

I also use STK when I want to send a non-Amazon book to my reader. I've noticed it does have the problem of not putting in the right author name automatically, but I just click on the box and type in the right name myself.

Yes I do too, but if Amazon are never told of the error they won't be able to fix it, but its like banging my head against a brick wall. I sometimes think I must speak double dutch.

I encountered this problem when I updated Send To Kindle to 1.0.1.240. I downgraded to 1.0.1.239 and all is well again.

It looks like that version can still be downloaded here (not vouching for the site, but it seems reputable).

Just curious what this "It takes forever" thing about calibre is. Are you just referring to the abovementioned configurable delay meant to avoid Google thinking you are sending out automated spam by hitting their servers a dozen emails to send in the span of as many seconds or so?

Again -- you can change that...
