Question Kobo update makes device unusable

Hi

I've had a Kobo Glow for 5 months.

1 month ago I selected 'update' to update to the latest firmware or whatever Kobo was pushing out.

After installing the update my device crashed.

I've factory reset multiple times, but the update is automatically updating when I connect to my network at home. Each time I install the update the device freezes and I have to factory reset.

When I try and select 'setup computer' instead of the 'wireless setup' the device asks me to charge. But even when connected for days the Kobo doesnt charge.

I can't use it anymore, its so annoying. I read books all the time.

Is there anyway I could install the old Kobo software like firmware or something and disable the update?

Thanks

That's unusual. The factory reset and upgrade usually solves problems.

Are you saying the message doesn't change or the battery indicator doesn't show a charged battery when you disconnect?

There are instructions for downgrading here. And this thread has a list of firmware downloads you can use.

As to disabling the upgrade, you can't. It will only happen when you do a sync to the Kobo server. If you don't do that, you won't get the upgrade. But, if you are buying books from Kobo, you probably need to sync.

You might also reach out to Kobo. I had a bad upgrade happen to my touch, and they were fast to offer a replacement. Especially being five months old, you should be under warranty.

I hope you get to reading again soon.

I bought my Kobo new -BUT from Ebay from someone in Japan. I guess that means Im not under warranty -as I guess warranties are only applicable when sold through authorised retailers....I know know

@davidfor Are you saying the message doesn't change or the battery indicator doesn't show a charged battery when you disconnect?

The latter. When I plugin and charge for e.g 3 days )!) it seems to charge - but I don't get a 'charged' message when I disconnect. I just get the same 'please connect and recharge screen.

The problem is the upgrade happens when I select the option to 'connect to my wifi network. The only other option is to connect to my computer -which when I try just always shows the 'recharge screen' even when its recharged.

So I don't have any option but to install the upgrade.

I think I might just try downloading the old firmware and if that doesnt work accept defeat, throw it in the bin,and buy a new one one my credit card from an authorised dealer - so at least I should have 1 year of Kobo reading next time
