Can't Get Any Promo Codes To Work

I hope I've posted this in the right place, as near as I could tell, this was the best fit.

I have a problem with Kobo discount codes. None of them will work. I've been trying for about a week. I've tried 4 different codes that Kobo have sent me, as well as various other codes I found online. I checked to make sure that they were for my region (UK) and they were in date. I've tried using them on 4 or 5 different books from the store, as well as trying to checkout in three different browsers (and clearing my cache/cookies). I also tried doing it in the desktop app (in which there was no option at all to enter a promo code), as well as the Windows 8 app. I always get the same message, "This promo code could not be applied."

I sent in a request for help to the Kobo service, and haven't heard anything back, not even a confirmation email to say they'd received my email. I tried ringing the customer service phone number, but it went through to Scottish Power!

This whole experience is very disheartening. I haven't had my ereader that long. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong, or have anything they could suggest? Thanks in advance for any help.

What are the publishers for the books you are attempting to buy with the books? I don't know for sure about the UK, but in the US, none of these publishers or their subsidiaries allow coupons: Macmillan, Penguin-Random House, Simon & Schuster, Harper Collins, and Hatchette. Search for the author of one of your books you are interested in. On the left there should be an option to select only the books eligible for promo codes. If you select it, and none of the books show up, it's because the publisher (and/or Kobo) is not allowing it.

If you select one of the books eligible for promo codes, will it take your promo code (you don't have to buy it)?

Thank you so much, bgalbrecht! That was the answer. I had no idea you couldn't use the codes on all books, though it seems quite obvious now. Sadly a lot of the books I've been wanting to buy aren't eligible for promo codes. At least I know now.

There is some great concise information about this in the first post of this thread: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=115233.
