Nook to Kobo
Has anyone here gone from a nook to a kobo? If so, what are your thoughts?
I have the ST with Glowlight and I expect I'll need a replacement sooner rather than later. The lack of an SD card and limited memory for non-B&N material turned me off the new Glowlight. |

If you use Calibre and some plugins, the Kobo devices are far superior to the Nook. Calibre can automatically create and update collections on the device, which it can't do for Nook. That is an awesome ability. You may find the Kobo processes newly added books a little slower than the NST, but not a lot. I recommend the Aura or the Aura HD, depending on your needs.

I went from a Nook ST to the Aura HD. The reader software deals with images in a superior manner on the Kobo. Double tap on an image in a kepub and you get a full-screen, rotatable, zoomable view. On the Nook it was strictly WYSIWG. This works on native kepubs and epubs converted to kepubs automatically by the extended Kobo driver plugin loaded in Calibre.
Customization is a bit easier on Kobo as well -- easily loaded user fonts, and software patches that can be used without an involved rooting procedure. |

No external SD card and little memory are 2 big reasons I have not considered buying Nook Simple Touch reader even at discounted prices. Original 2011 version for $30 2 weeks ago I would have bought if it was available.

I've been told that B&N's DRM is compatible with ADE, so you shouldn't have any trouble transferring even DRM-encumbered files, whether by entering an ADE account on your Kobo, or otherwise dealing with DRM.
Once you're using the Kobo with Calibre, you'll find it has a lot more flexibility than B&N devices. The ability to map tags or other metadata to shelves makes finding books much easier. You will also be able to view and manipulate series information easily. You can also update Calibre from the device for things like reading progress. |

B&N DRM is compatible with ADE as in you can open a B&N ePub in ADE 2.0+, but it's not readable with the Adobe RMSDK used on the Kobo for Adobe DRM'd books because they haven't enabled support for that form of the DRM key (they only support Adobe ID).

I strip the DRM from all of my purchased books, so compatibility isn't an issue. I just don't want to convert all my epub texts to a different format.

Epubs will display perfectly on the Kobo reader just as they did on the Nook. Kobo also uses .kepub format which you could use, but for myself, I don't like it and I use only .epubs on my Kobo Glo.

I held onto my NST for the kids in my life some people who occasionally want to borrow a reader, but am VERY satisfied with my glo and just converted a coworker to the same device. |
