Hope this is in the right place, and sorry for my rambling...
For the past few days I've been adding personal books to save on Calibre, and as such there are no identifiers (Ids in Edit Metadata). Once I closed that and chose to either view the file or Edit the book, there was a fairly long delay (comparatively speaking...about 15 to 20 seconds instead of opening in 2 or 3 seconds as usual). Since the id was the only change, I decided to add a url in there to a particular site as reference but of course, I didn't put url in front, just started it with http. This made the delay even longer. When I went back into Edit metadata, there was now a url at the beginning. Okay, all that for this: What can I put in that identifier box to not have a delay when there isn't really any identifier for a book? Of course I realize my initial delay might not have been related, but after that corrected link was there (url:http.......) there were no longer any delays, and they returned when I either deleted the whole link or removed url as a test. |

I have a lot of books without id (most actually), never had a problem with delay.
When I use the id, it's only for the isbn. |

Yeah, usually when I add a book, it's filled in (or not I guess) automatically. Since I'm putting these in manually, maybe that's a difference. I really can't say. All I know is, when it's blank for these, it's slow to open. I added website links because that's what gets put in when I add some of my fanfiction books. Without that 'url:' prefix though, the delay is painfully long.

I have never suffered any delays from books without an identifier.
I strongly suspect that you had some other problem entirely. |

![]() I have a 38,000 article library, and an 8,000 item media library and a 5,000 book library. The article and media libraries have no ID's, the book library has the usual suspects. The delays are the same in all three libraries - which is to say not very much. What happens if you open a book file in the viewer or editor directly BR |

My guess is those books that delay are composed of one giant html file instead of being split into more manageable pieces.

Now it shows no delay or no really noticeable delay with an empty identifier box (of course!) but still a huge delay if I put it the web link without the url: prefix. The files are not long, showing at only 8 pages, 22kb

Okay, I have a whole different problem. I do know that if I put an identifier (web link) without the 'url' it causes a delay.
The other problem, is that I've noticed after the delay in opening the edit book feature, it seems to have gone ahead and done the 'fix errors' thing, because I have tags added everywhere that weren't there before. I'll have to investigate this to see exactly what's up and see if it's a problem I need ask for help with. I really didn't notice this before, so not sure if that was the original problem or something new with just one or two files. |

I'm confused. Why is it you are putting a web link in the ID field again?

![]() Granted, that means by definition you need to use the id-type part of the identifier... Why the OP wants to avoid using it, especially since it seems to solve the problem, I don't know... ![]() Actually, I'd thought you can only put in isbn numbers without using the type. A raw link should be rejected? ![]() |

So what I'm hearing is; "when I exclude the prefix I'm supposed to include for url-type identifiers to work right, things don't work right" ?

I had thought that IDs only accepted prefixed data, plus valid ISBN syntax; clearly I'm wrong apparently, "http:" counts as a prefix ![]() Not that it does much ![]() Code:

I wanted to point out an obvious difference between having the 'url:' and not having it, I have no idea about what should and shouldn't be, I only know what I see
![]() I experienced long opening times (20-30secs) on a couple of epubs with the editor soon after its release. The files with long opening times had no files in the Text section - I had run the books thru Modify PI. But I was able to open the same files in Sigil, so I did my editing there, and then I was able to open the epub file I saved in Sigil in the calibre editor. Didn't think too much about it at the time, put in down to a 'crappy epub' (they were converted from HTML), calibre editor teething problems and my scant knowledge about the internal structure of EPUBs, I wonder if the ID with or without the 'url:' is a red herring, the sole purpose of such things is to confuse the observer ![]() BR |
