Moon+ / Dropbox / Calibre qq's

Hi folks, not entirely sure if I'm in the right bit of the forum, so please do move me if there's somewhere more appropriate. I've thrashed through some previous threads and got everything talking to everything, but I have a couple of questions:

This is where I'm up to so far:
  • I have a large epub library that I manage using Calibre on my laptop.
  • I have the library pointed at my dropbox.
  • I have dropsync on my Galaxy Note 2. It is set up to create a non-editable mirror of the calibre library on an external SD card.
  • I have installed Moon+ Pro on the Note. I have set the default directory to the non-editable mirror and told Moon to import books in that directory automatically.

This is what I'd like to know:
  • Whether changes I make to the tags, covers etc (is this what people mean when they talk about metadata?) in the calibre library will roll through to Moon? Or will I need to delete and reimport them?
  • Does Moon keep things in a separate directory somewhere?

With thanks,

- Chez

Hi Chez,

Rather than completely duplicating your calibre library directory to your Note2 have a look at buying the Calibre Companion (CC) android app instead. It's only £1.99 and is developed by one of the senior calibre developers (chaley) and his family. If you do this (and assuming you have Wi-fi) you will guarantee that any changes you make to calibre metadata (tags, covers, series etc) on your laptop will be updated in your Note2 library each time you connect CC (via Wi-fi) to calibre on the laptop. I don't believe your current plan of duplicating the laptop calibre library to the Note2 will give you what you want.

Instead, you would connect your Note2 to calibre on your laptop via Wi-Fi using CC and then transfer books using the standard calibre send-to-device method to push books (and metadata) to the Note2 . Alternatively, you can use CC to connect to laptop calibre's content server to pull books to the Note2. In either case, once the books are on the Note2 you use CC to act as the library manager, sorting/searching/grouping/browsing synopses etc. Once you've selected a book to actually read, CC will offer you a list of all the apps on your Note2 which can read that format. So if it was an epub Moon+ would be in that list. Once you've selected a reading app the chosen book will open in the selected app.

My own setup is Galaxy Note3 with CC and a selection of epub and pdf reading apps - although Mantano is my current favourite. I can thoroughly recommend CC as my android book manager of choice. I have no interest in the library features of the reading apps themselves because, quite simply, CC is better than any of them if you're a calibre user.

There's a whole MobileRead sub-forum dedicated to CC and if you have any problems you can ask questions there, often answered by chaley himself. Have a look at the FAQ sticky thread at the top.

Thanks for the reply, Jackie, I appreciate it. I've used CC very successfully in the past with a Galaxy Tab 2 and I agree that it does what I need. However, I've not been able to get it to work on the Note, either via Wi-Fi or the content server despite thrashing through various options, including putting the IP addresses/Ports in manually from both ends. I will have another look in the archive and see if there's anything I have missed and if not, start my own thread.

Thanks, again.
