When calibre connects with the reader, it retrieves all collections for the books on

I tried to find this in the FAQ, but the page I was sent to doesn't have it - don't know if it is my question or not.

Anyway, when I connect my ereader, Calibre spends a lot of time compairing the books on the ereader to the library in order to show which ones are on the ereader. When I only want to add a couple of books to the ereader, I have to wait a long time (since I have a lot of books on my reader) just to get to the place where I can add them.

Is there anyway to turn this feature on and off?

It shouldn't take too long to check... I don't think you can turn it off but I may be wrong

Preferences, Advanced, Plugins, Device Plugins,
Disable all plugins here, so calibre doesn't meddle with your device.

Use "Save to directory" feature and copy files to device manually.
I do it this way.

calibre should be saving a metadata.calibre file to the root of the device, in order to cache the scanned data. THe first time you connect, it may take a while, but afterwards calibre will finish scanning in a matter of seconds.

Is that file getting deleted somehow? Or are you changing most of the books around in some other manner than using calibre, causing calibre to need to scan tons more books that have not been added to the cache yet?

I'm using Mantano if that makes a difference. Sometimes it takes 3-4 minutes to check.

But you would've saved it to the file storage, not sent it to the app.

I should think calibre still saves a cache to the device storage even on a tablet/smartphone. I remember loading up a friend's Galaxy S III with some PD books and there were a bunch of saved options including restricting which folders to scan for new books.... which come to think of it may be anotherr way to get a speed boost.

I personally do not want Calibre to rummage around on an SD card. I have an e-ink reader that supports directory structure and I keep *a lot* of books on it, organized exactly the way I want. I prefer to upload groups of books manually, each with a Calibre generated catalog that describes all the books in that series of subdirectories.

Sometimes I want to connect the reader quickly to my PC and transfer a single file and Calibre needlessly rummaging in my large collection, even for a few dozen seconds was annoying me.
So when I discovered the above described trick here I was very happy. I am just passing the info to make somebody else happy ;-)

I did indeed see your post. And I offered an alternative approach, on the assumption that more information never hurts.

Once your device connects, right click on the device icon and configure the device. Your device may be set to scan for new books on connect. Turning this feature off will speed up connection.

Even though I have 10,000 books on my device when I connect wirelessly to calibre as a device via the Calibre Companion app it only takes about 2-3 minutes to connect and update all the metadata of the books on my device.

Ohh, thank you - that did the trick! Knew there had to be a way. Appreciate it so much - also appreciate everyone else who offered help.
