Which one

Was advised to post on this sub thread as am completely new to e-readers ,
e -books and in fact anything with an "e " prefix is a mystery.

Think it best to read through this thread first in order to try and figure out which reader I should go for. Must say that having spent a good part of the day reading through various parts of this excellent site , many of my questions have already been answered. For example ; a big negative regarding the Kindle paperwhite seemed to be that one could not download from anywhere other than Amazon. Since joining Mobileread , I find this not to be true. If I were to download the complete works of a popular author from one
of those torrent sites and it appeared in the MOBI mode , I could then download direct onto a paperwhite without using calibre . Have I got that right ?.

MobileRead has a strict policy against discussion of or help with piracy. Torrenting popular authors almost certainly falls under the category of piracy.

Please don't discuss piracy here -- repeat offenders will be BANNED by official forum rules.

Feel free however to ask about anything non-piracy related.

Actually, in the interest of free speech, you can discuss piracy in the abstract in this forum. You can express your opinion. What you can't do it aid and abet piracy or request that some help you in a pursuit of piracy. If you admit piracy you are likely to get no help from this forum. Piracy and aiding in piracy is illegal in many countries and is against the policy of this web site.

To the OP, there is quite a bit of background on eBooks and e things in our wiki. You may want to look there to get you feet on the ground.

Good point, I was not thinking of discussion in those terms.

@safrane,

The Kindle does have a browser and you can download .mobi/.azw3 books with it -- handy for accessing a calibre content server with your personal elibrary. There is also http://www.Gutenberg.org or our very own MobileRead library for downloading public domain books, also easily available through the browser, and similar resources.

What others have said, torrenting is pirating and is illegal. You are welcome to ask any other questions. I told you to post in this sub forum because if I recall correctly, you need an ereader and you're not sure which one to get? What are you looking for in an ereader? Do you want a built-in light, or is it not important. What about size, etc.

Regarding ebooks, and like I stated in my post in your first thread that if you go for the Kindle PW, you can definitely purchase books from other stores such as Kobo, B&N, etc. But keep in mind that a lot of ebooks are DRM-protected so you're going to need to strip the DRM from non-Amazon ebooks in order to read them on the Kindle. Just a heads up, discussing how to remove DRM is against forum rules.

But we are allowed to advise you to google "apprentice alf" for your DRM-removing needs.

Good Lord , what have I done to offend so many ?. I only used ( albeit a very bad ) example of what may be possible to offset the ( what I thought was ) limited downloading possibilities of a kindle.

I have no idea of how to use any of these illegal sites , it was something told to me.

Also I have no idea what a DRM is , nor an OP.

OP is you (Original Poster)

Quote:
Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a class of technologies that are used by hardware manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders, and individuals with the intent to control the use of digital content and devices after sale.

Electronic books read on a personal computer or an e-book reader typically use DRM technology to limit copying, printing, and sharing of e-books. E-books are usually limited to be used on a certain number of reading devices and some e-publishers prevent any copying or printing. Some commentators believe that DRM makes e-book publishing complex.

I don't know much about the Icarus 8. I'm assuming it will be a bit heavy since it has an 8" display. Are you looking for an ereader with physical buttons?

"Torrenting," itself, is not pirating -- though it is often used for pirating. It's also used for large, legal downloads, like my Linux Mint DVDs (and also used with many other Linux distributions). It spreads the load around, so the main servers aren't hit so hard when there are new releases of the DVDs. For Linux DVD downloads, the torrent download is often much faster than a regular HTTP download from a server.

Welcome to Mobileread. You managed to hit a 'hot topic' with the question about torrents of popular authors.

My first bit of advice would be to see some ebook readers in person if at all possible. Then you'll have a much better idea of what features are important to you. (e.g. physical buttons, screen lighting, size of screen, weight of device)

I think that if I was buying a device today for general reading of novels, the Kobo Aura HD would be my choice. It's got a very nice hi-res, slightly large screen.

Just bought an Aura and had a long, hard look at the Aura HD. What got me to choose the Aura over the HD was the pinch & zoom ability, which is extremly handy for me as I often read books with maps in them and the easyness to regulate the light. You just move two fingers up or down the screen and the light dims or brightens. Adjusting it this way doesn't interrupt the reading as the "normal" way (tap to bring up the pop-up menue, slide to adjust and then tap again to close the pop-up) does.

The bigger screen didn't weigh out those two features for me.

So, I am with PDurrant, having a hands-on is a must!

Oh, I need to add I adore my Aura :-)

All very interesting reactions but of course , I'm even further away in making a choice.
The pinch & zoom sounds good as my main reading interest is military history with plenty of photos and maps. That's why the larger screen also sounded good.

Dosen't need to be physical buttons !.
