Calibre 1.33 update ends with error message?

I just installed the 64-bit update and it gave me an error message about a .dll not being the right version for my operating system? I'm running Windows 8 (64-bit) and haven't had any prior problems running any version of Calibre with it.

Thanks,
Cyn

@technomom

Was the error raised by the installer or calibre, and to which .dll file did it refer, calibre installs 188 dll's.

Perhaps you could post the full text of the error message (calibre messages have a copy to clipboard button) or a screen shot (see https://www.mobileread.com/forums/faq...b3_attachments )

The error was raised by the installer, and it didn't say which .dll or I would have given you the name of it. I just ran it again, and it didn't recur. I didn't think to get a screenshot, unfortunately, and I didn't notice the copy to clipboard button at the time. Sorry.

@technomom - so its OK now ?

If so then... how odd.

Did you have any Windows Updates on foot, ie installed but waiting for a restart to complete the update. I had something similar in respect to Feb's WU, not with calibre, something else - Fast Picture Viewer maybe.

Red face

Yes, it seems to be fine now. I don't recall any Windows updates that were applied afterwards, but perhaps there were some lurking. Sorry!

Thank you,

I hate those 'Stealth Update' completions

You think the updates have completed from when you allowed them to launch ( I ONLY use 'Allow me to choose').
Then you go to shutdown later in the day, only to receive the message 'Installing updates: Do not turn off the power' Some of those have run 15 minutes and I had an appointment that I ALSO needed my laptop at. Even if I wanted to transit with an OPEN Laptop, 15 minutes of intensive disk and CPU does wonders for battery consumption and prevents normal (protective) bagging </rant>

theducks: How do you end up getting it to do that? My experience is that, providing one's choice is to choose to download and install updates, it proceeds to do so immediately (assuming an internet connection is available) leaving no part of the process for "later in the day".

That over many years and many PCs through XP to Win 8.1 in the Professional or higher versions (I cannot recall how pre-XP version updates worked, and have little experience of the "Home", etc. type versions). Of course, a PC manufacturer's own cook-up of Windows may perform differently.

Am not questioning what you say. Am just interested as to what is behind your experience, in case is come across elsewhere.

So WU never asks you do to a restart - and you never get the Windows is Updating itself - X% done - don't turn this <bleeping> computer off!! as its shutting down and starting up again.

If so, how the heck do you did you manage do that?

I get the 'lock icon' on the shutdown option that theducks is referring to if I neglect to do the restart when it asks me. Maybe one can use Sleep at that point, but I've never been game to try it.

I won't even let WU start the downloads unless I am confident I have the time to do the whole enchilada, nor do I start any long running tasks until its done everything it needs to do.

I'm not aware of any OEMs that mess with WU, IIRC under the terms of their agreements with MS they're not allowed to, its a pretty stringent agreement, or it was when I last saw one, which admittedly was last century.

When I can I replace the OEM install with a vanilla install from MS media, if there are any OEM utilities needed (rarely - most of it's 3rd party crap) I download them separately.

I've never some across anything that claims to obviate the need to do restart on some windows updates.

Pre XP was always a big

I only use. NOTIFY, then do a Custom Update, Picking and choosing what I allow (no Bing, Index), For years I had a Turtle Beach Montego sound card tat Windows would misidentify (used the same sound chip) and mess up the driver. I ran a Netware 4.2 server for years. Win messed the drivers for connecting to that also.
Manual is my way. W3.11, W95abc,98,98se,2K pro, XPpro, W7hp

Yes it does. But in my post I specifically referred to theduck's experience which was that these things happen "later in the day" for them.

But to elaborate:

My experience is that no part of the update has ever happened "later in the day" but instead the download and installation proceed serially from the moment the update is initiated by myself.

I do, very occasionally then get prompted to restart after updating, this almost limited entirely to "Patch Tuesday" updates so such restarts are no more frequent than once per month and usually less frequent than that. As I recall I am always given the option to do that either then or at a later time initiated by myself and apart from major updates (such as the recent close to 1GB one updating Win 8.1 64bit where, in fact, a series of restarts were prompted ) any extra delay due to the update during the start is brief, and when it is to occur is entirely in my own hands.

My own practice is to update when I know that in the rare case should a restart is prompted, I can perform it immediately without interfering with anything else.

I do not recall these delays having been any longer in XP, Vista and Win 7, but that said they probably seem less intrusive with Win 8's hybrid boot which means it probably does a start, runs through an install delay, and is ready to use considerably faster than an ordinary XP start, for example.

Yes, I do manual pick and choose updates to, for the same reasons after having long ago run into problems turning out to be due to driver updates.

I do allow the driver updates to install, however, but knowing they have done so would be the first point of call should a problem arise after updating. That said, I have not had such an issue for quite some years now.

I am getting an error when I try to install 1.33 as well.

calibre Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run Setup Wizard again. Click the Finish button to exit the Setup wizard.

I have never had a problem before. Anyone know what the problem could be?
