Library Limitation

Just tried to put a hold on a library e-book, and got a notice that I couldn't because said book had been available for only a limited time--but it might be available again in the future.

Turns out it's a HarperCollins title, so I assume it reached that 26-checkout limit.

First time I've seen this kind of notice. Not happy.

Sorry about that Catlady. I would try to call your local library. Even if they can't get you the book, they may at least be able to tell you what happened. If the circulation limit was reached, maybe the library decided not to renew the license?

If the book is no longer available, they should remove the link so you wouldn't expect to be able to read it.

I have had a couple books that sat on my wishlist for a long time and then became unavailable before I got around to reading them.

My guess is that the link is still there because the number of holds already on the book would bring it to the limit if all those holds result in checkouts.

I have never seen this kind of notice before, and am wondering if others have found books unavailable because of the limits.

I tried to check out a book on my wishlist a few weeks ago and the checkout failed when I went to retrieve it on Amazon. OverDrive support said it was no longer available and cancelled the checkout. I wonder if it was HC too, now.

My local library prevents reservations of books they've newly acquired as they tend to be in demand. It may be the same situation here, the intention is to prevent a popular book being held in limbo with nobody reading it.

That's what happened to Mark Kurlansky's Salt: A World History in my local library. For a very long time it was hard to borrow the printed book even though the library has 3 copies as the reserve list for far to many.

At a guess, the book I was checking out had been sitting on my wishlist for about a year. Without being checked out for most of that time.

I don't think this can be the case. E-reservations automatically expire in a few days if you don't check out the book and are seamlessly offered to the next person in line. Ebooks are way different than pbooks -- you just have to see the email and go to the online library to check out your book. For pbooks I can see the books in limbo for much longer because people have to actually go to the library to get the book, which is a lot more effort than just checking your email and clicking a link.

I know I've let pbook reservations expire without picking up the book and almost never let my ebook reservations expire. The only time they ever expire is when I'm on vacation and not checking email regularly.

This would be my take on the situation too. I would check the book daily and try to place a hold in case one of the people in line lets their reservation lapse, which would free up one more loan of the book.

I'm sorry that happened; that's never happened to me. Sounds like other posters have given good advice.

If I reserved an ebook that my librarians confirmed had become permanently unavailable at that library, I would be annoyed (briefly). Then I'd try to borrow the book another way, not necessarily in this order: borrow the ebook via another library app that has a different book list (e.g., Overdrive Media Console vs. 3M Cloud Library), borrow from a different ebook lending library system, or check out a DTB version from a nearby library.

I've never used the Kindle or NOOK ebook lending systems, but I guess those are possible options, too.

Advice appreciated, thanks, but I'm not particularly put out about not being able to borrow the book itself--I ended up simply buying a copy and reading it over the weekend. The notice just surprised me. I expect to be seeing this kind of notice more often now that some time has passed since the limitations were instituted.
