Keyboard shortcuts to sort columns?

One of the things I do most in Calibre is changing the sort order. When I add new books I sort by date, when I check if there are any duplicates I filter on the author's name and sort on either title or series, etc etc.

I've scraped through each and every Calibre preference option but I've been unable to find a way to assign keyboard shortcuts to default colums like author, title, date, series and pub_date. Can it be done? If not, how do I propose this idea to the author of the program?

It's already pretty fast to sort the library by a particular field just by clicking its column header. If you need to do a multi-level sort, e.g. Author/Series/Title, click each column header in reverse order, i.e Title > Series > Author.

Another couple of items you may find useful if you're not already using them:
- Ctrl A to select all books by the Author of the currently highlighted book.
- Prefs - Tweaks - Specify columns to sort the booklist by on startup

@ymmv - Excellent idea

I have my common sort sequences set up in the View Manager PI ( click)

I've given each of them a kb short cut. Maybe this would also work for you.

Hmm ... the view manager could be a solution.. Looks like a very neat plugin. Thanks for making me aware of your work! But the way I would like to work in Calibre is that by pressing a keyboard short cut to sort on Author, pressing the same key would reverse the sort order. In your view manager I'd have to make two views to sort in ascending or descending order.

@ymmv - it's not my Plug In its kiwidude's Plug In !

Any questions/requests should be posted in the PI thread.

But as the PI sorts on multiple columns I'm not sure how a toggle between ascending and descending would work. Maybe you could make the Author Ascending kb shortcut Alt/1 and Author Descending Ctl/1 etc.

I believe there is a direction flag for the startup sort. So Kiwidude may have that also (I don't use that PI)

@theducks - yes, View Manager has option to override the start up sort, see PI General Options

@ymmv - I just remembered there's a Sort By feature

It can be put into the context menu, it has a switch to 'the other order' function. It was added to calibre when the cover grid came along, but it works in the Book List view context menu.

OK, it's not a kb shortcut, but IMO a context menu item is the next best and sometimes an even better thing - tap Menu key and use arrow keys - don't have to remember anything.
