Dear Kindlers
A friend of mine had bought a second hand K3G keyboard and hit his route to Nepal. Unfortunately the device he just started enjoying paid him an unpleasant suprise with its screen fault. He claims the screen couldnt have been broken. And the fault visible @ the photos beneath grew gradually & constantly starting from being 2 cm big left corner. Has anyone of U seen such kind of fault &/or may diagnose a root cause of it? Last edited by Dr. Drib; 03-11-2014 at 06:56 PM. |

It sure looks broken to me. Do an image search for broken Kindle or reader screen and you'll see similar. The glass surface itself may not be broken to the naked eye or broken at all but obviously the substrate below is. Sorry!

100% definitely a broken screen substrate. Absolutely classic image of it.

Root cause: The kindle got bent and the display back-glass snapped. It doesn't take a lot of pressure on the middle of the sides of the bezel or on the casing back to do this as the display is stuck to the bezel and the bezel itself isn't that rigid. A more robust casing design would have been a lot heavier.
Was your friend using a purpose designed Kindle hard cover? All the soft sleeves are trouble waiting to happen. Best way forward: Advertise it on Ebay as "... parts only. Broken screen but otherwise OK" or keep it for parts and buy another used one. K3 3G currently retails at £40 and at that price it isn't worth fixing them. If it didn't have a hard cover get one. This is complicated by the logistics of getting it to your friend but shouldn't be impossible. If his current location has ludicrous import taxes, it may be best to post the broken one back for 'repair' !!! Last edited by Ian.M; 03-11-2014 at 12:40 PM. |

Kudos to every one who spent his time sharing his opinion.
I'm passing all of them to my friend. btw. IMHO For the off-the-beaten-path traveller the K3G is the best-ever device as it always guarentees him emergency free access to email. |

Unfortunately the 3G coverage isn't worldwide and even in countries which have it enabled, its quite easy to chew through the 50Mb monthly data allocation if your email provider's webmail site is full of bloated scripts, stylesheets and graphics. When he gets a replacement, your friend should make sure he has his provider's mobile webmail site bookmarked, and should use WiFi whenever it is available rather than 3G.
It is possible to get the Kindle Experimental Browser into a persistent state where it errors out loading non-Amazon pages even if one's usage is under the data cap. A device reset followed by visiting the Amazon store to establish the 3G connection, followed by using the browser to access the US Amazon login page usually resores normal operation. |
