Yep, figuring out how to do a post was a challenge... so I guess it's gonna be a while before I'm up and running! huh... I meant up and READING!
So, my son is 11, ready for his e-reader... I'm trying to figure out what to get. Whatever I get has GOT to display comics and have some control that I can use to prevent anything to run on the device, except for the e-reader. It's so much more fun to play a game than read a book! I figure if he has a cool new toy where he can read comics, he may actually develop a taste for reading and start reading... oh my... Chapter Books!!! Long story short, I don't have the device yet. I downloaded Calibre to use their viewer and see what Comics eBooks look like. I started by looking at their user guide which I found extremely dry (not even an icon in the content). OK. So I got a Garfield Comics eBook. No images... So I tried a Naruto Comics eBook. No images! Nothing in the user guide about a plugin I should get. And one thread I found here points to no such problem... I am probably missing something. So all in all, I would welcome a pointer to a thread, a site, or whatever resource that could help us get setup. I want to be able to let him browse eBooks websites so he can pick his books on his computer. And then he can get those books on his e-reader so reading time is READING time (in his school/after-school program). Sorry about the long post and THANK YOU for any help you can provide! Hi,
I suggest that you post this in the "Which One Should I Buy?" forum. This one is Introduce Yourself. It's a good idea also to mention your budget , where you bought these comics from/what format they're in, and where you're planning to get them in the future (Comixology? Library? Somewhere else?) The parental controls issue might be on the tricky side with some tablet devices, but I know iPads have them to a certain degree. However preteens are pretty smart; there's a good chance they'll figure out how to circumvent any technical controls you place, if they are motivated to do so. So human supervision is needed if you have concerns, as with all network-enabled technology. |
