Help needed with downloading ebooks

Could someone help me?
I'd love totell you what I'm reading but I need help with it first. I just joined and as a newby I have no idea how to download books from here. I have a kindle reader (not new) and when I clicked to download my PC said it could not open the file.
Apparently it is not "easy" and I am not savvy.
Can someone tell me what to do so I can REALLY join you?

Welcome to MR!

You can download the free program Calibre
http://calibre-ebook.com

you can drag and drop books that you've downloaded here and use the program to transfer them to your Kindle. Best of luck.

I've moved your post to its own thread, since it was not appropriate for the reading recommendations "what are we reading" thread.

Click on the E-Books link in the blue bar.
Select Kindle (Mobi)

That will give you an alphabetical list (by author) of all the free, public-domain ebooks uploaded to MobileRead that will work on your Kindle once you've downloaded them and copied them to your Kindle's Documents folder.
