Just installed 1.23 over the previous version and it required a reboot.
This is calibre 64bit on Windows Server 2012 Essentials. Strange. Never nedded a reboot before. What's the cause of this? Many tanks! |

Must be Windows Server 2012 specific issue, because 64bit 1.23 didn't need a reboot on my Win7 SP1
Or maybe one of the calibre executables was running when you did the install As you say strange - but its been that sort of day br |

The calibre update only requires a reboot if:
1) calibre or some other program from the calibre suite is running when you update 2) Windows, for some convoluted reason known only to Microsoft decides that updating calibre needs a reboot. For example, if you click a link inside calibre which causes a browser to open and that browser window is open when you update, windows believes a reboot is needed. Complain to Microsoft. |

Thanks for the answers.
BetterRed: I've installed all the updates for about a year now in WS2012 Essentials and never had to reboot. Kovid: It must have been nr. 2 as calibre was not running at the time of the update. No big issue at all. Just wondered because it's the first time after many installs a reboot was required. |

FWIW - In desktop Windows if calibre.exe is running then MSI pops a message offering a couple of choices - one of which says you will need to reboot after the install. Not sure about other exe's in the calibre family.
I sometimes see the browser issue in another situation. Files are 'locked' by the browser that Windows thinks are owned by whatever started the browser. But it only seems to happen if the browser is Firefox or older IE's, don't think it happens with Chrome or IE10/11 <sigh> I can avoid the problem with Firefox by cancelling the profile selector if another program starts Firefox BR |

I've had this happen randomly in the past, on several occasions. These days, I always update Calibre when I first switch my computer on in the morning. Since doing that, the problem hasn't occurred.
