Amazon Kindle formated books

I have been looking at several books at over drive and I have found under format overdirve lists several formats. Mobi and Azw are not among them however Kindle Fire is among them. My question is this do Kindles and Kindle Fires read the same format? I think that htey both read the mobi format.

If it reads "Kindle Fire", it's probably azw3 and any of the newer Kindles (Kindle Keyboard or newer) can use azw3.

The Overdrive page on my local library's site specifically says that Kindle Fire is supported, but other Kindles are not. I assume it means that you would need an app for the Fire that can read Mobi books.

Edit: I just realised the above is wrong - see the next three posts in this tread.

No, it means only the Kindle Fire can run apps, which is necessary in order to read EPUB formatted OverDrive books locked with Adobe Digital Editions.

The entire Kindle line reads MOBI and the recent ones (basically, anything Kindle Keyboard and onwards, but you may need to update the firmware for KK, KT, and some of the older basic Kindles) support reading the AZW3 updated form of MOBI.

Any Kindle no matter what will suport directly reading any book which is checked out from OverDrive as a Kindle book -- it is recorded in MYK and your Kindle Cloud, like any other book, but as a loan you lose access after it expires.

EDIT: I almost forgot -- this only applies inside the US, as Kindle checkout isn't available from OverDrive outside the US! In that case, your ONLY option is ADE-protected EPUB, so you will need the OverDrive app for Kindle fire, and e-ink Kindles are right out. One workaround is to buy a US library card, say, from the Free Library of Pennsylvania which offers paid membership out-of-state/country.

It means that for a Fire, outside the US, you need to download the OverDrive app from the app store (or sideload another app that supports Adobe DRM) to read the ePub version of the book. There are no Mobi versions for OD books outside the US.

That's right. I was talking rubbish when I said you need to download an app that reads Mobi format. I realised that after I posted it. I feel particularly stupid because I had just installed the Overdrive app myself.
