A strange question, but believe me it is an important one.
My grandmother uses the Kobo Glo I got her all the time. She has fairly severe dementia, but can still read and retain what she reads, so she devours books like crazy. While I was visiting I plugged her Kobo into my laptop in order to put some new books onto it, and the Firmware updated. The new firmware no longer has the little 'smiley face' animation when loading, sleep mode, etc. This really, really upsets her, as it has her convinced it's not her Reader. Is there ANY way I can get that animation back? Any way I can go back to an earlier version of the firmware that does have that smiley animation? |

You can find links and directions on how to roll back in the Kobo Developers Corner subforum above. I can't remember what firmware took that away, but if you do a search on the forum I seem to remember it being discussed at the time.
Good luck and I hope you get things back to the way you need. |

In the .kobo folder of your reader you should have a file named affiliate.conf.
If you open it with a text editor you can change the line of text affiliate=xxxxx (in Italy it displays affiliate=Mondadori) writing Kobo instead of xxxxx. That should bring back the kobo logos. Just to be sure make a copy of the original file. |

Having trouble figuring out how to downgrade, but I'm sure I'll get it eventually. Thanks, guys.

The rolling back process will involve doing a factory reset, so you should save the book files to your PC, beforehand. It maybe that you will have it where you want it, just from the factory reset.

Sadly no. After a Factory Reset it doesn't allow you to use it before setting it up online, which gives it the most recent firmware.

in order to initialize the reader without registering you can add a new line to the "user" table of the database. Fill in any fitting values. Depending on your reset firmware version, the number of values varies. Example for FW 1.9.12: Code: INSERT INTO user VALUES ("0", "0", "0", "0", "0");Example for FW 2.5.0: Code: INSERT INTO user VALUES ("0", "0", "0", "0", "0", "0","false") I think you use the SQLite Database Browser. Right? Open the database file "KoboReader.sqlite". Select "Browse Data" and choose the table "user". Look at line 1 and try to establish whether the values of one of the two examples might fit or whether you have to make some modifications. I guess the second example might be correct for the Mini. Choose Execute SQL, enter the command "INSERT INTO user VALUES ..." and press "Execute query". I can only confirm that the values work for FW 1.9.12. I did not try it with more recent firmwares. If the reader does not accept your values, you can try replacing them by others (maybe the email address must look like an email address, e.g. name@xmail.com, or something like that). -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- tshering It is working for all the FW. The tool you need, here. You do the reset and connect to your PC with the USB cable, you might want to turn off the Wifi, as well. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 01-27-2014 at 04:08 PM. |

Ohgodbears, after you have done a factory reset, you can safely put an older version of the FW in the Kobo, and it will downgrade to the version you want. It might be easier than Ken's characteristically arcane solution

"tshering's" solution, editing the database, lets you use the new FW without requiring the registration process. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 01-27-2014 at 06:30 PM. |

I feel technologically illiterate here, but I'll sit down with it and try to figure it all out once I have a chance. Thanks, guys.

Sure, you have to register the device. But after that is all over, just put the FW file that you want (from https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=185660) in the .kobo dictory on your Kobo (hm, confirmation from somebody, is that the right directory? Suddenly I'm unsure) and you're golden. When you disconnect it from the pc, it will "update" to the FW version you want.

With the database edited, a factory reset will not ask for the registration of the device as it thinks it is already registered. Luck; Ken Last edited by Ken Maltby; 01-28-2014 at 10:47 AM. |

No, that's not the case. At least it wasn't for me. You register it when you do the factory reset, and then you downgrade and you don't have to register again. Just like you don't have to register when you upgrade your FW.

Wait, if the books on there are directly dl-ed from Kobo to the device, you might be right. I always sideload, so that's my perspective.
