Covers no longer show in Calibre's Viewer

ClaudeB, I don't post often either, but I noticed a similar issue and thought I'd add to your post.

I updated Calibre this morning to Version 1.20 64-bit Windows 7 Pro.

I see the all of the covers in the main view of the software, but when I open the book in the eBook Viewer, I get the default Calibre cover with Version 1.15.0. The book covers did show previously.

Note: Some of my covers do show in the eBook Viewer, but not all.

Any suggestions or fixes? Is this a bug? I only use the eBook viewer when I'm working and need to reference a book. So, this isn't a big deal for me.

If you want changed covers to show up in the book viewer you need to either do an epub to epub conversion or run the polish book tool.

I didn't do anything this morning, except upgrade to version 1.20. I had the previous version and am still using the same computer.

The book covers showed up prior to the upgrade. Additionally, this only effects some books not all of the books. So, it is sporadic in nature. Like I said before it is not a big deal for me, but still doesn't make any sense.

I'm sorry I don't know what the polish book tool is and I wasn't unable to find it in the user manual.

Polish is a fairly new Standard Plugin.
You may simply need to add it to the Toolbar (of choice) from Preferences: Toolbar

I'll try this, thanks for the directions. I've never had a problem until I updated to 1.20 this morning. If this doesn't work I will go back to the previous version of Calibre.

I'm still wondering why this happened...

That wont make any difference. All versions of calibre behave the same way. Changing the cover in the calibre library does not update the cover inside the ebook files. Covers inside files are only updated when those files are exported from calibre or when you run Polish books or convert.

The other thread was about a Linux upgrade that caused problems with covers showing in the GUI and yours is about a Windows 7 box having problems with covers showing in the viewer.

Edit: Kovid already stated this in post 7. I should pay closer attention. None the less here is the same info layed out in a different fashion, I hope it helps.

The book covers for these books never showed in any previous version. When you place a book in the library and adjust the metadata including cover for a book, that new cover is not automatically embedded in the book (epub or azw3) until the book is converted or exported from calibre using most any existing calibre feature.

• Send to device
• Save to disk
• Email from calibre
• D/L the book from the content server

Additionally the following features will embed the cover and metadata in a book that is still in the library:

• Converting the book will embed the cover and metadata in the converted book.
• Polish feature will embed the cover and metadata in existing Epub or Azw3 books.

In your first example (post 1) the default cover exists in the book because there was no existing cover in calibre when the book was converted to that format. Ever since the conversion with 1.15 that generic cover has been embedded in that book.

You can embed covers in books within your library by following Kovid's advice. theducks has already told you where to find the tool so you can add it to a toolbar or menu.

Going back to any previous version will not help. The problem was not caused by the upgrade, you only noticed the issue after you upgraded to 1.20. For the books that exhibit this error they have always exhibited this error.
