Conversion to EPUB Problem (and workaround)

For quite a while now I've had a problem opening EPUBs from Calibre in my Nook for Android app. They work fine on my Nook Simple Touch, but refuse to open in Nook for Android. They also refuse to open in Mantano Reader for Android.

After trying every combo I could in Calibre's conversion settings with no luck,, I finally found a workaround. If I open the Calibre-converted EPUB in the Sigil EPUB editor and save it again, making no changes at all, the saved EPUB works fine. So, it appears to be an EPUB packaging problem in Calibre's converter.

It would be nice if the Calibre developers would look into this. Seems like it would be easy enough to fix. Sigil code is Open Source.

There is no epub packaging problem in calibre produced epubs. Use a better epub reader on your android device. There are dozens.

Please post an ePub from calibre that doesn't work, along with the same file after passing it through Sigil and that does work. Make sure it's a PD or CC title, not a commercial ebook.

I doubt that calibre is doing anything that violates the ePub spec, but it would be interesting to see what the differences were, and try to pin down the problem a bit.

The problem is almost certainly that the epub readers in question cannot handle either:

1) files with the same name in different folders in the epub
2) filenames with characters that must be URL encoded in them

Don't get me wrong, I love Calibre. Have just been getting frustrated that I couldn't use ePUB conversions on my Nook Android app and some other readers. Of course, now that I'd like to send you a sample, the conversions are opening up just fine. <scratches head> I guess I'll get back to you if I run into it again. Thanks.
