Hi folks,
I've got a paperwhite 2 with 5.4.2, and while reading PDFs I constantly get a warning message: "Low memory The selected item could not be opened. Your Kindle doesn't have anough free memory." After clicking "OK", the home screen appears. I just have 50 ebooks on it, so it must be refering to the working memory. It also doesn't depend on the size of the PDF. I searched the internet and forum already, this error seems to be pretty common. Is there anything I can do to avoid this error? I'd like to NOT jailbreak, since it's too complicated for me to remove the JB once I want to sell it. Any help or thoughts will be very appreciated. ![]() |

Get used to this.
Accept unavoidable. Start to like it. Well, you might also try to "Restart" your Kindle ("Main Manu" -> "Settings", then "Main Menu" -> "Restart"), but I guess it will help just for a moment. |

Sounds like what my K3 did several times. I removed books & kept on reading. Then when they came on sale purchased another K3 thinking it was full. Turned out I had Downloaded a bad file! Clear off the PW & start over. When you hit the bad file delete & forget it. IF you purchased it from Amazon contact them & they will fix it. Be thankful you only have 50 I had 500+ LOL

By memory, they mean RAM, the storage space has nothing to with this
![]() If you don't want to JB it, then you'll have to live with it (or use less complex PDF files), but if you do JB it, we have a bunch of more efficient PDF readers (KOReader, especially). That said, IMHO, reading PDFs on a 6" is still painful, no matter the quality of the software used ![]() |

You can also use it to reflow A4-sized pdf, both scanned and vector pdf, or adjust two-column pdf with 2-column mode. http://www.willus.com/k2pdfopt/ There is native and bitmap mode to choose from. In native mode resulting optimized pdf stays always as the original (bitmap image or vector pdf) and in bitmap mode turns to bitmap always. For example, if your native pdf uses some complex compression that makes page turning really slow, it is good idea to use bitmap mode for optimization, because even though resulting pdf will be a lot bigger than original, it will require a lot less processor power to flip through the pages quickly. Thanks for all your answers!
@pepe_alter_ego: "start to like it" good one, very spiritual approach to the problem ![]() Quote:
I actually used k2pdfopt already, and had good results as far as optimizing page-size and cropped margins, but the 'low memory' error occured anyway. I never checked, however, about the native or bitmap output. The aspect about the processing power makes sense, I will check it! I am, however, also really intrigued about jailbreaking it.... it just seems like so much effort. Is there a way of reversing the jailbreak in a simple way (I remember some script for KT which would install the OS from scratch, for bricked devices...dont remember the name of it though) ? edit: just saw it! The program that I meant is Kubrick. But it seems rather for unbricking than reversing a jailbreak, and it seems a bit too complicated for me too edit2: @NiLuJe: I saw a yt video of KOReader, and it looks brilliant. Would love to have that one without having to do a jb and messing around with the system (I can't code). Last edited by JFHey; 01-23-2014 at 03:40 PM. |

I tried k2pdfopt again and changed the output to bmp.
The 'Low memory' error occured after about 6 pages. I opened the file again and clicked through around 15 more pages, and the kindle just restarted. Frustrating software-messup from Amazon. ![]() |

it's not rocket science, but for someone who has no background knowledge in software development, it appears like a rather complicated thing to do, just based on my first impression of the countless links in the KUAL tutorial and the possible errors and follow-up problems you can run into (just to mention automatic software updates).
I think the work of the jailbreakers is amazing, but unless I had tons of free time right now I wouldn't want to dive deeper into it (only to use a function which the Kindle should be able to execute innately). |
