Diagrams, equations and tables in e-books

I enjoy reading technical and popular science books. These frequently contain diagrams, equations and tables which seem to be handled as pictures on ebooks. Unfortunately on Kobos they are displayed very small, typically being squeezed into half a page width, which makes them totally illegible. I have tried to raise it with Kobo support but their only response is that there is no facility to change the size of such objects on Kobo ereaders. They dont see it as a serious bug, which is strange seeing as some of their most expensive ebooks are highly technical.

Any ideas? Any work rounds? Any way of persuading Kobo to fix, what seems to me, to be an obvious bug?

If they are embedded as graphics, you should be able to zoom in by tapping twice quickly on the image.

A zoom slider appears at the bottom of the screen, IIRC.

Two possible options:
  • If they are images (jpgs, pngs, ...), as chrisridd said use Image Briwser by double tap. Buuuut, it only works in kepubs. So if your books are epubs you need to use jgoguen's Calibre KoboTouchExtended driver for automatic conversion on the fly.
  • Edit the e-book (with Sigil or with the new Edit book in Calibre) and tweak the CSS style of the images to make them bigger.

(For both options you will need DRM free epubs or neither jgoguen's driver nor the editing tools will be able to access the book. An Apprentice who is called Alf, google for it, would be your solution)..

Chartwell font

Kobo shoud support the Chartwell font.

This set of tools for easily creating graphs is conveniently disguised as a set of fonts. OpenType features are used to interpret and visualize the data. The data remains as editable text, allowing for painless updates.

Kobo or Access as a member of the Readium Foundation should suggest this a wanted feature of HTML5/EPUB3 Reader. To be sure that it is fully supported.

Ah, I didn't know that was a feature of the Access engine - thanks for clarifying!
