Bug - Calibre confused by books with the same title

Just come across a curious bug with Calibre 1.17, 32-bit, running on 64-bit Windows 7, and connecting to an iPad Mini via the "iOS Reader Applications" plug-in to send books to the Kindle App.

I have two books in my Calibre library with the same title: "Conqueror". One is written by Stephen Baxter, and is configured in Calibre to be book 2 of the "Time's Tapestry" series; the other is written by S.M. Stirling and David Drake, and is configured to be book 2 of the "General" series. The books have separate IDs in my Calibre library (303 and 3074, respectively) and when I display them in the Calibre book reader, everything is absolutely fine.

The problem is that when I send both books to the Kindle App on the iPad Mini, whichever book I send first appears normally in the library, but then, sending the second book overwrites the first, but leaving the metadata for the first book in the library. Thus, if I send the Baxter book first, and then the Stirling book, the Baxter's entry appears in the library, but when I open the book I find that it's actually the Stirling book. This is totally reproducible.

I've tried changing the "Send to Device" template from:

{author_sort}/{title}

to:

{author_sort}/{title} - {author_sort}

But it's made no difference.

Is this likely to be a bug with Calibre itself, or with the "iOS Reader Applications" plug-in?

I should add that I've worked around the problem by slightly changing the title of one of the two books.

Well I can't say anything about the cause, but as a workaround, maybe try the plugboard? Try to change the title to Title - Author, instead of just the template for the path?

They already have different titles assigned by the plugboard, because I'm using a plugboard to prefix the title with the series name and number. The issue seems to be the actual filename of the book (which I suspect is simply the title), rather than its metadata. It doesn't appear to be honouring the "Send to Device" template.

I'll raise the issue with the author of the plug-in.

I've logged the issue with the plug-in developer; I'm pretty sure now that it's a plug-in issue, not a Calibre one.
