Buying another PW2

I am aware that this might sound slightly insane, but I am strongly considering buying another replacement PW2. The reasons are that no one knows if it'll even be possible to jailbreak/downgrade devices after 5.4.2, and if it still is, then these "bugs" will with a very high probability be fixed in the new device generation, rumored to be somewhere in 2014.

Also the current device, at least on version 5.4.0, is ideal for me. The lighting is good, the design is nice, the feature set is relatively complete and as it seems the Collection Manager kindlet will soon work for that version too -- there's nothing else I really need.

The replacement of course would mostly be in case that the battery dies at some point (I know I could replace it manually if I wanted to), or the screen cracks/the device somehow breaks in any other way.

So what do you guys think about that idea?

I think it shows a lack of faith in the Kindle Dev corner, who have managed to jailbreak every firmware so far.

Why should the next one be any different?

That's not it at all. The next one might be different because there are not unlimited approaches to jailbreaking the device. Once all errors from Amazon's side have been fixed, it will become impossible -- simple as that.

I was considering a Paper White 2 but then decided to sit out the model due to the number of paper white owners that said if they needed to chose between their model one and model two they would opt for their model one. I am going to wait and see what the model three is like. I do not see it as a good idea to have several kindles around the house, although there is something that has to be said for technological refreshment.

Batteries do not live indefinitely just because they are not used. It will probably only last marginally longer than the one you are using. I would keep the Amazon faith.

In fact, batteries in many of today's devices will fail earlier if you don't regularly use the product. I've been using my Kindle keyboard for 3 years now and no battery issues yet. I use multiple ereaders (I use 3), so I see no issue with buying another. I don't see why the NEED to jailbreak (I don't even know what it does), but that's your personal need then go for it. Even if they stop upgrading the software in future years, so long as you continue to remove DRM from ebooks you buy and store them in Calibre, it won't be an issue.

My wife has a PW1 and I have a PW2 and can say that although they are very similar the PW2 has the edge. The lighting is more even and the small shadowy patches near the bottom of the screen have been eliminated. The light can also be turned down to a lower level.

In terms of firmware, the bookmarking process has been improved and there's a handy mode where you can flip through a book without losing your current place - or you can jump to any page that you flip to. Perhaps these features will be rolled out to PW1 but that's by no means certain.
