[Errno 13] Permission denied: 'L:\\driveinfo.calibre'

I have tried to do my due diligence before admitting defeat and posting here. I have a Kindle PW and have been getting the below error message all day. After researching, I re-formatted my drive to FAT32, reloaded my calibre, still got the error and eventually did a restore of the Kindle. After that I was able to load some books but then got a similar message except it was saying 'L:\\metadata.calibre' (instead of 'driveinfo calibre'). After more researching, I saw that possibly the problem was that my files were read-only - I checked and they are but when i try to remove the read only, it doesn't 'stick' - what I mean is that I hit apply after clearing the checkbox but when I go back into properties, it is checked again. I'm not sure if that is the underlying problem and if it is, I don't know how to make the read-only go away. In any case, at this point I'm not really sure what to do... Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Failed to access files in the main memory of your device. You should contact the device manufacturer for support. Common fixes are: try a different USB cable/USB port on your computer. If you device has a "Reset to factory defaults" type of setting somewhere, use it. Underlying error: [Errno 13] Permission denied: 'L:\\driveinfo.calibre'

If you cannot change the permission, then your Kindle drive is probably failing. Reformatting it or reseting the Kindle are the only options. However, if the drive is failing the problem will likely show up again in a little while, as you discovered. You can probably continue to use the Kindle if you put onlya few books on it at a time and reformat it periodically, but you should reallys end it to amazon for replacement.

I was afraid of that... I'm not sure what to tell amazon. I'm afraid that since I can't pinpoint the problem and that it manifests itself when I load through calibre they will tell me it's not their problem.

Thanks for the info!! Ironically, calibre still loads the books and they seem to be okay... calibre just spits out the same error about the metadata permission. And, of course, since it also thinks it can't see the device (or whatever) the Kindle Collections button is missing so I can't do that either.

Thanks again!

just a follow-up to this issue... the problems all began because of a virus in the drive. After AVG cleaned up the virus is when calibre stopped being able to read my device. It seems the reason was because the folders were hidden and being treated as protected system files as a result of the clean-up - or something to that effect. Regardless, I was finally able to get the folders un-hidden by clearing the attributes using the command line.... long story short, as soon as they were unhidden, calibre was able to see my device!
