Can't find annotation files anymore

Hi there,

It used to be that I could find xml files of the highlights and annotations for my ebooks in a "digital editions" folder on my Kobo Glo. After some software update (not sure which), that folder seems to be missing. I've also turned on "show hidden files" to poke through all those folders, but nothing looks like my annotations.

Any idea on how to find these files nowadays? I know I can use the "fetch annotations" feature in Calibre, but that has been very incomplete the few times I've tried it so far.

Thanks!
Tandava

The annotations files are still there. They are in "Digital Editions\Annotations". But, they are only produced for epubs and PDFs that are on the main memory of the device. If you are using kepubs, either purchased or sideloaded, or putting the books onto the SD card, they are not produced.

For the calibre "Fetch annotations" feature, what is wrong? I am not a fan of it (I don't want the annotations in the comments), but I do maintain the code. If you can tell me what is wrong, I can look at it to fix.

There are some other alternatives. Several people have posted scripts or programs here to fetch the annotations.

There is also the Annotations plugin for calibre. This can retrieve annotations from various devices into a customisable column. It needs code for each device. I have been working on the code needed for the Kobo ereaders. I have it with someone else for testing, but if you want to try it, I can send it to you with instructions. You will need to install the plugin and edit a configuration file to enable it.

Ah, I see. I'd mistakenly assumed it was a recent software update that did it, but actually, I had also recently figured out how to make all my side-loaded epubs into kepubs, and that's why I didn't have the Digital Editions folder any more. Thanks for pointing that out.

Bummer, though, since I really want both the annotations file and the kepub features. So I'd be happy to test drive the plugin you're working on, and I'll also look for some other scripts, as you suggest.

"Fetch Annotations" in Calibre would actually be an excellent solution for me, except for the fact that what it gives me is incomplete. On the last book, I only got 6 out of 26 total highlights. Other books have had better rates, though still incomplete. Also, I think it doesn't pull out my added notes, though I don't have many of those and it could have just been coincident with the general missing highlight problem.

Thanks,
Tandava

I'll send you a PM with the details.

I haven't noticed anything missing when I have tested this. But, it might treat annotations differently than highlights. And it should pull out the added notes. I'll have a look. It will give me something to do while hiding from the in-laws over Christmas.
