Using Windows 8.1 & Kindle app
I have successfully transitioned Calibre DB and plugins to Dell Venue Pro 8. Surprisingly capable W8.1 tablet. However, I would like to use the Windows 8 Kindle app as the default viewer for mobi and azw3 and unable to make the file association in Windows as neither of those extensions show up and the Kindle app doesn't seem to allow adding any extensions manually.
As an FYI I am not liking the W8 Kindle app - no personal docs! Thanks in advance for any input. Not a deal breaker, just a bit confusing. |

I'm using a desktop running Win 8, and now 8.1, and I quickly found that I had no use for the Win 8 Kindle App. I quickly downloaded and installed the more full featured "Windows 7, Vista, and XP" reader. It runs perfectly well on Win 8/8.1.

Yes, downloading the Windows 7 version does work and I had been able to have Calibre use the W7 version of Kindle as the default reader. I was trying to utilize the Metro Kindle app as in my opinion it is a bit more of a seamless tablet reading experience.

I am working from memory here, as I gave up on the Kindle App (on PCs) some time back, finding it too limiting, but I think it will only open books in ones Kindle Library (after associating the App with ones Amazon account). If I recall correctly it would, however, see books put into that library by, for example, the Kindle desktop application.
I don't think that even if the App only is installed (i.e. the desktop application is not present) that the App was able to be associated with the file types for double click opening in Explorer, and I think you are saying that is your experience. It may be that someone who has both the App and the desktop application installed can add to or correct, from immediate experience, the above. For me, anyhow, as my preference was the desktop app with its increased functionality and given the App's limitations (apart from it's nice reading presentation) I was led to just dumping the App as being more trouble than it was worth. |
