PC World Selects HDX 7 As Year's Top Android Tablet

Not sure if you saw this, but PC World released its annual list of the Top 50 tech products of the past year. Featured in the top 50 were many tablets, including the iPad Air, Nexus 7, LG G Pad 8.3, etc. However, only two tablets made it into their top 5 (as featured in their "Top 5" video): The Surface Pro at #2 and Kindle Fire HDX 7 at #3. That makes it the only Android tablet in the top 5 (actually the only one in the top 10, even). And it puts it at a higher ranking than even the iPad Air or iPad Mini.

No huge surprise, to me. I think the kindle HDX (and HD for that matter) is excellent.

Sure, if you don't care about a black background that you can never change....I got sick of it on my 2012 HD and rooted it. Have a nice Christmas wallpaper on it right now

That should have went to the HDX 8.9 tablet. The display on it can't be matched yet. They must have not tried one. I saw one in the store yesterday and it was pretty amazing. Totally different that the 7" no blue tint but warmer and the colors OMG they just pop out on you. I just can't justify the price though and it's a bit bigger than I can hold but I can see now why everyone is raving about it and saying it's better than the Ipad Air.

The 8.9 does not use Blue LEDs it uses white and the difference is HUGE!

Yes....my son has that wallpaper and I am grooming him to be an astronaut though if he doesn't get his math scores up, he isn't going to make it.

I love that! I don't mind the UI if I wasn't hit with Buy me everywhere. I'd love to be able to rearrange the tabs to my use.

Books, Documents, Music, AudioBooks....etc

I love the black background with white text on my HDX 2013. I can't imagine reading without it. I even changed my GSam app to work with white text on a black background and use most of my other apps that way if they allow it. By the way, there is no blue border as well if you go that route.

I notice that on the PW 2013 I MUST use black text on a white background. Its too bad they don't allow it there.

They're talking about the background on the home screen on the Kindle Fire how it can't be change and it just black. You see on other tablets you can change this using wallpaper just like you can on your computer's desktop. On my Nexus 7 I have a pretty purple design as my wallpaper.

I don't mind the black UI it's much better than the light grey shelves the Original Kindle Fire has. Now that was yucky to look at.

I'm always skeptical of these lists of best products, and their reviews too. I think they don't even look at 2/3 of the products they rate. They just formulate some lame set of criteria and look at specs, features, and price to see which best meets their criteria. Unless you spend hours which each device you cannot really judge them. I also question how they could put any device that is little more than a huge advertisement in the top 5, especially when it has obvious screen issues, a lame app store, and "Buy Me" popups everywhere.

Well the HDX 8.9 is pretty nice device and they didn't even mention it so I agree I don't think they even looked at many tablets before choosing.

They must only go on ones they've looked at which is pretty misleading, IMO.

Personally, I think all three of the Kindle Tablets could be on the list. I don't have a lot of experience with the Nexus 7 but I know a lot of people like that one as well.

Yes, the difference is huge.....about $200 huge. I'm pretty sure that a magazine such as PC World knows the 8.9 exists, yet they chose to specifically single out the HDX 7 as the third best tech product of the year. Believe it or not, there are things to prefer about the 7" over the 8.9": better bang-for-the-buck, easier to hold one-handed, lighter, and when you start getting too high-resolution of screens on too-big screens, you start getting into this weird zone where text is too tiny. No, I'm fully prepared to accept PC World's declaration that the HDX 7 is the best non-Microsoft tablet released in the past 12 months.

I think the lesson I, as a newcomer, have learned from this thread, is that no praising of the HDX 7 is allowed. Which is probably why I'll move my conversations elsewhere.
