So how do you download books onto this thing?

I've always sideloaded my books as I'm not a big fan of the kepubs. For kicks I decided to download a book directly to my HD which I had previously bought on the computer. I synced my reader and...nothing happened! No new book was downloaded to my reader! How does one go about getting a book onto a Kobo if they don't want to buy it directly from the reader store but they don't want to hook up to their computer either?

Forgive if this is too obvious, but of course you are logged in with the same account in the reader and when you bought the book? The sync should do the trick, so I am puzzled it is not working for you.

Sorry, but I have to ask the obvious questions: What format was the book in, and where did you buy it from?

If a kepub from Kobo, which I'm guessing, go to kobobooks.com and check your library, see if the book is in the "I'M READING" section. Once it's there, it should download when you sync (so long as, as paola says, you're logged in to the same account.)

What do you mean you synched ? If the book is not from Kobo and it is obtained on your computer you must sideload it. Only Kobo books bought on the Kobo store from your Kobo reader are wirelessly synched.

Also this may be a DRM issue which if it is, I will let others help as I never dealt with DRM's and thus cannot help you with it.

Aura hd works with dropbox!
You just upload the book to your dropbox account, than enable wifi on the Aura,
open the browser on your ereader and log in with dropbox (save this page to favourites for convenience), search the book in dropbox click on it till you see the option download and click download, wait till Aura asks if you want to download and click OK. Go back to home screen and there you have it.
If the book is Adobe Drm protected than you have to authorise the Aura first.
Download ADE software to your PC ,make an account if you haven't got one.
Connect Aura with cable to the PC, and in ADE click authorise reader OK.

I've purchased Kobo kepubs from my computer and they automatically synced to my Kobo ereader over wifi. They also automatically sync to the Kobo apps on my iPad and phone when I open the Kobo app. All devices are using the same Kobo account.

Regards,
David

Interesting. I wonder if I turned off some setting when I originally got my ereader? I bought the book from the Kobo store of course. Pocket articles automatically sync just fine.

If you open up the kobo desktop program your book bought from Kobo should shown in your library. Connect your Aura (I have the small Aura not the HD but I assume it's the same process) by the USB lead. Once the Aura is recognised press connect on the Aura, the Kobo desktop program will now connect to your device. Any books in your library not yet on your ereader shoukd then sync across. You can see the process at the bottom left of your screen. Then when it appears to have been completed eject the ereader. The Aura then loads the book and it will appear under books.

I'm sure you know how to do this already but I agree it's quite a strange and unwieldy process and I've had one sync which didn't actually do anything, which I can't explain.

If you purchase a book, it should be downloaded at the next sync. But, if you do a factory reset or log out, only five books are downloaded when you log in. The rest have the details downloaded. In the library list, these will have "Download" as the status. Tapping the book will trigger the download. They can also be hidden. In the library settings, there is an option to show these in the lists. Do you have this set?
