And suitable for a pre-teen girl.....
I am giving her a kindle fire for Christmas and have started selecting some books to get her started. She is frighteningly bright and I am sure will find all the apps she wants. Her parents may choose to block access to the amazon store, though I hope they will only stop her actually spending money

Having spent quite enough money on her by getting the kindle, I don't want to actually BUY books for her. I've downloaded the Amazon freebies that look to be of interest, and am looking elsewhere for sideloadable books. I can convert formats, of course. Preferably nothing too gender specific, there are already enough cultural pressures to girly conformity without me adding more.
Thoughts?

pocketbook-int.com offers downloads of bundles of public domain books in various languages, including French. If you go into the Support page and choose any model, you'll see a list of links to the downloadable bundles. These are the EPUB books that come preloaded on their devices. Does the Fire support EPUB format books?

I left a suggestion in the French forum but other readers may also be interested: there's the Bibliothèque électronique du Québec, which has more than 1600 public domain titles. The titles are available in EPUB and PDF, and there are PDFs for big and small screen devices.

Anything from Jules Verne should be fine (Cinq semaines en ballon, Le tour du monde en quatre-vingts jours ...).

Also Les contes d'Andersen, but maybe she's too old for that.

I'll think about that and come back if I have more ideas.

Jules Verne should be good. I can find that no problem in fr. Andersen, why not? She can always ignore it if she feels herself too old :-)
The main thing is to get her started ,

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes is translated and widely available as public domain, although not a French author. Also, depending on her taste, some or all of the Alexandre Dumas books (Three Musketeers and sequels, Man in the Iron Mask, Count of Monte Cristo). I read in French very slowly, but have enjoyed some of each author's books in French, to try to keep my French, such as it is, from going stale.
