As in what do you like about his writings, what makes it unique? I'm asking for my own curiosity. Unfortunately, "so many books, so little time", etc.

he didnt write books.he also wrote stories, where human kind CANNOT win.Its just not possible. He wrote about theese great horrors coming from the most abysmall depths of the universe, from the most primodial stages of time. His work is unique in many ways.
One thing I have to relate, though you may not get it at first not being a Lovecraft fan.On youtube, one of the coments said "Cthulhu is just a main antagonist in a book series". This is hilariously untrue in SO many ways and shows the persons utter lack of knowledge. 1-Cthulhu ISNT an antagonist, simply because theres no one that can BE the subject of his antagonism.Mankind will be destroyed and submited to a glorious dark age of madness, thats it-no hope,no oposition,no victory. 2-Lovecraft only wrote three or so novels, not being in any conection to each other ,most of his works being short stories. 3-Cthulhu PHYSICALY APEARS in ONE of his stories. so? but a quick question-do you know "the king in yellow"? |

At the Mountains of Madness... my favourite short story of his, and (along with some of Lovecrafts other work) was clearly the inspiration for 'The Thing'.
The thing I find so enthralling about Lovecrafts work is the sense of dread and terror that it inspires in the reader, the feelings are only hightened by the fact that most of the evil in his work is intangible and the descriptions of the really *awful* things that pervade his 'mythology' are left almost *entirely* to the readers own mind. If you like Lovecraft and/or whole the Cthulhu 'mythos', then I can heartily reccomend 'The Call of Cthulhu', the RPG book. It's a huge wealth of background information. Also, the collected Cthulhu Mythos cycle has just been released in a lovely leather bound volume from Gollancz (here, on Amazon). |

I'm not a Lovecraft fan, per se, but the majority of his writings are about placing a reader in an atmosphere, rather that character development, or story development. A different standard than what many people expect.
For the Lovecraft fans out there, who also have a taste for hard rock music, I highly recommend Blue Oyster Cult's Imaginos CD. It's a Cthulhu Mythos story told as a cycle of 9 songs. You'll need to reorder the track order to get a linear story out of it, (due to massive fighting behind the scenes between the label and the creators), and it's hard to find, but really worth the time and money to locate. (I think it's one of the finest "concept" albums ever made, even against Pink Floyd's The Wall.) |

Dunsany is a great contributor to the genre, with many strange touches, such as Thuba Mleen, the horrid emperor,or the story he describes where a person jumps of the edge of the world seeing a certain light being lit and knowing WHAT lit it.Horrid.Wery horrid.

Hadrien and all else-wikisource too.the GREAT UNFOUND are his 4 collaboration with C.M.Eddy (ashes, the loved dead and the other two) ,which I wasnt even able to load for the short time they were on lovecrafts library, cause Eddy's descendant squaled. Seriously,4 stories, just FOUR are missing to have his entiere fiction output out.God.
Also:does the Merritt link link to The Metal Monsters original or the abgidged version? The original, even if it was published sooner,is nowhere to be found.I have it,though and the first chapter there is named "The return of dr. goodwin" . anyway, who here reads Clark Ashton Smith |

I did all the Merritt, so let me check on that later tonight or tomorrow. By the way, I love the work of Clark Ashton Smith. (In fact, I believe we share similar interests in fiction of the weird....; my interests also run into literature [read: literary fiction], as you may see by the titles I've put together for myself and for MobileRead.) I have an almost complete set of the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, dating back to the late '60s. Don |

Once I re-pressurise to interweb access (have had the DT's for two weeks), will attempt to parse some Smith texts online.
@ Vivaldi (if he deigns return): One of the neatest things about Lovecraft was his sense of making Sci-Fi something new--not merely Westerns with helmets in lieu of ten gallon hats, but an interesting realm where we are not alone, and we are farked b/c of it. In most of his works, there is the overwhelming power of things greater than mankind. The boy could be quite over the top, and some stories easily lend themselves to that violin "ZING!" at the final denouement, but overall he was big on setting a mood. Sorry if I am repeating anything I or anyone else said here or elsewhere. When 546,244,232,781.896667 years you reach, let us compare memory recall. That is, if I elect to not devour your soul until then ;- |

the eldritch dark has his stories and poetry online. My most recent acquisation is "The Necromancer" by Teuthold ,even if It was probably not read by Lovecraft per se,it inffluenced Shelley in writing Frankenstein, and Ill probably get "The Dark chamber" from cline delivered theese days or so.
but what kinda pisses me of-on Hipoccampus Press' Lovecrafts Library series place, the double release of "Cold Harbour/Sinister House" by Young/Hall has no text on it,even if its due to come out this month.anyone know why the delay? |
