PDF problem in Calibre 1.10 on Linux Mint 15
When I select a PDF in Calibre's library to read, Calibre tries to re-add the book, and I have to hit the 'Abort' key.
As quite a few of the PDFs are manuals, I hesitate to convert any to another format. Although I did try that. As expected, the results are substandard. I have never had any problem with Calibre, (using it since 0.7), I am wondering if I have stumbled on a bug? Thanks, larry |

a) lost Adobe Acrobat as the default 'Open With' or b) Somehow set PDF filetype to open with Calibre By default, calibre lets the OS installed PDF viewer prevail Using you file manager, set Adobe Reader (or other PDF viewer) as the default 'Open With' ![]() |

Yup, that is pretty well happened. As I am a Linux greenhorn, I am still stumbling around. I had Brasero grabbing the PDFs. Obviously that won't work. So, I installed AcroRead, figuring that would fix it. Sure, that would do it, but I like Calibre's reader.
Anyway, thanks theducks, I think I got it now. PS, I like your avatar. I have a old grey kitty who has been in logging camps in Northern Cal and now in Oregon. She is good company. Thanks, larry |

Yeah, travelin' kittys are fun. Kitty didn't like traveling, but once she was there she was fine. She's old. About 13, or abouts.
Well, I got rid of Acro, still have it uninstalled for now, but have the same prob. I logged out and back in. Figured that would cure it. Nope. Calibre still tries to import the book. Got any more ideas? Thanks larry |

I only have mint14 on a live CD
If you don't want to use the OS for PDF: Preferences: Behavior: Use internal viewer for: (Tick) PDF Btw 'Document viewer' is the Mint default for PDF |

Open Nemo file explorer and right-click on a PDF, view Properties, under the Open With tab, click the Reset button. Or manually set document viewer as the default.

Thanks for your quick reply theducks. I looked at the document viewer, but it isn't near clear enough for these old eyes. I think I will reinstall Acro and live with it.
The new Mint, Petra is in rc now, since yesterday, so I'm not going to change a lot until I see what the new mint is like, since I'm planning to reformat and the whole nine yards anyway. Can't tell I'm a new convert from winblows, huh? :-) I have XP on another drive dual-booted but forgot what it even looks like. Kinda like an ex-wife. And that is a good thing. Thanks for your help, larry |

Thanks eschwartz for your answer. I think I will live with re-installing acro, since it is quite clearer, (to my eyes, anyway). I liked the Calibre reader the best, but it looks I broke it. I'm a logger, I can break *anything*. (:-,)
I'll be re-installing in a couple of weeks when the new Mint is ready anyway. Thanks again, larry |

Calibre's viewer is essentially a epub viewer. Any book you read using it has a basic conversion to epub before it is opened in the calibre viewer. You are best served by viewing PDF files in a program designed to view PDFs.

I like this forum. Everybody seems to be real friendly. It seems to be the best forum for Calibre too. Especially, since Kovid checks in here. ![]() thanks, larry |
