Very big files

I'm trying to convert a book (a dictionary) in mobi format to epub format. The file is very large about 6MB. After 30 minutes the progress is 47%. Is there a size limitation to convert? Why cannot Calibre convert this file? Some time ago I tried with another dictionary and the same thing happened.

Thanks,

P.S. I've a Sony Reader. I cannot add new dictionaries. So, I'm looking for a dictionary (German - Spanish) in epub format.

This is a guess: While the book is converted it requres a lot of memory. For a large book it might even mean that the memory in the computer isn't big enough. Then the computer starts using virtual memory which is very slow.

64 bit calibre on a 64 bit OS with plenty of RAM should help a lot.

You can run a system monitor tool in your OS to see if this guess is correct. Check memory usage and usage of virtual memory/swap file while calibre is working.

There's no size limit -- for example, just today I had to convert a 50 MB comic book from ePub to azw3, and the run time for it (I just checked) is 32 seconds.

Is your computer lagging in anything else? If so, the problem may not be calibre.

You could try restarting calibre and seeing if it still lags.

Or else, the file may be broken in some way and calibre choked on it. Try submitting a bug report if nothing else works, at http://calibre-ebook.com/bugs, and make sure to include/attach the job log and the input file.

I suspect that a compressed dictionary will expand a lot while it is being converted. And since it is a dictionary there are a lot of links. I suspect that makes it even more demanding to convert.

This is normal for dictionaries. It doesn't sound like it has failed. This conversion can sit at 47% 24+ hours or longer. If you click on jobs (lower right corner) you can open the job details window and view the progress. The biggest problem you run into with dictionaries is the possibility of running out of memory, if this happens the job will fail and provide an error in the job log.
