Moving from ibooks to a new device, HELP?

Hello,
I am having a major dilemma and I just can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for. I currently read on my ipad using ibooks. Almost all of my books are epubs that I have the physical files for on my PC. I usually email myself the files and then 'open in ibooks' on my ipad.

I then sort my books into separate folders in ibooks, this feature is VERY IMPORTANT to me as I like to see things organised.

I've been looking at the following as a replacement:-
Nook - looks like it doesn't have folders/shelves on the device
Kobo aura/glo - can I organise books I've loaded from my collection?
Kindle paperwhite - would need to convert epubs and not a great fan of seeing my mum and husbands books in the archive folder (as they both have kindles on our amazon account)

I just need some advice on which is the best device to organise and read my own collection, ideally with a book cover view as I like to see things visually. I have calibre on my PC but I've never used it really.

Any help would be VERY appreciated as I'll hopefully be buying soon. Thank you!!

You can create and organise shelves for a Kobo on Calibre. Take a peek at the stickies in the Kobo subforum.

You can organize your books into groups on a Kindle, each group is called a collection. The drawback to a kindle is you will need to translate your epubs to mobi format with the help of some translation software such as Calibre.

Yes, but can I organise my own books (ie books not purchased from kobo) and save these on the memory card? Or do they have to be put on the device? I'm getting myself in a tizz wondering if calibre will do what I want and not give me a headache. I'm relatively techy but never played with ebook systems

Sure, you can put your shelved books either on a card or on the device's main memory. It's as simple as choosing the one or the other in the dropdown on Calibre when you're sending your books to the Kobo. I sideload all my books, and that's what I'm talking about, not books bought directly from Kobo and loaded on to the device from them.

The shelving system takes a little while to set up properly, but it's not difficult if you follow the instructions in the thread step-by-step. After that it's very simple to use.

Thank you! That helps a lot. Now to go figure out calibre!

Nook has both shelves and folder view (called My Files). It shows pretty book cover images in the regular library and shelves. When you do the folder view it shows a generic file icon.

If you buy the older model (black color) then it has an SD card slot for expanded storage. If you buy a newer model (white color), then there is no SD card and you are limited to only 500MB of storage for your own books. That equates to several hundred. B&N reserves the rest of the space for purchases from them.

You can drag and drop files by USB to the device. No need for calibre if you don't want to use it.
