Nook HD+ cable
I am madly in love with my HD+. I am an extremely picky, critical person but even I am struggling to find too many faults with it. Awesome!
The only concern I do have is the cable. It doesnt seem to fit into the Nook quite as snuggly as it could and it moves around quite easily, stopping it from charging. Is everyones like that? It charges fine when its sitting on the table, but if I am using it while its charging, I do find it stops fair easily. My other query is about getting a second cable, to keep as a spare. I dont live in one of the countries B&N supply to, so I have to get anything like that sent over by a freight-forwarding company. Buying a cable from B&N would be too expensive. I have a friends in the UK who could get me one, but I dont know what shops sell them. Does anyone know please? |

I've found that the cable doesn't fit that snuggly in my HD+; it tends to be looser on the right edge. The Nook HD, however doesn't seem to have that problem.

And those other 2 links are for online purchases, where as I am looking for a physical retail store that sells them. Amazon are wrong in listing a micro usb cable as being for the HD+ as thats not what the HD+ uses. The HD+ uses a 30pin plug that is proprietary to the Nook. Similar looking 30pin plugs, such as Apples, dont fit. Last edited by Chapter One; 11-09-2013 at 03:11 PM. |

Mine is also looser on one side. What a shame B&N didnt spend just that tiny bit extra in time and resources to sort that at the manufacturing stage. From what I am reading online, its a common problem.

Mine actually fits in quite snugly. I've only had it a week or so, maybe they've improved them.

I've had mine a year and it's not that snug either. If I'm using it while it's plugged in, all I have to do is bump it and one side will pull out, which stops it from charging of course. Just something I learned to live with.

I just bought the Nook HD and love it. I'm read the posts and am wondering why one would root it? It allows the Android market place, accepts SD cards and is really fast. What is the purpose of rooting this lovely little reader/tablet?

Rooting simply gives apps and the user access to parts of the OS you normally don't have. It can be dangerous if you don't know what you are doing or are reckless, but on the other hand, it's very valuable for some purposes, and some apps require your device to be rooted. I find it useful primarily for backups. You need to be rooted in order to backup an app plus its data; without rooting you can only backup the app. There is another mod from the XDA forums you can make to allow sideloading and "unknown sources" and this mod can be done by itself or in conjunction with rooting. If you don't do anything else to the stock OS, I suggest you at least make this change. It will let you install a lot of apps that the Play store won't let you -- such as many news, weather and travel apps. If you decide to do nothing to the stock ROM, you can still install an alternate launcher or customize the stock GUI by hiding the home page carousel and using your own art for app and folder icons. That's why I like Android. You can basically make your device look or act anyway you like instead of being imprisoned in a sherbert-colored world that is currently iOS. ![]() --Pat |

I prefer using a preconfigured dual boot SD card such as those from AFN which allow me to switch back and forth between the stock Nook OS and android jelly bean. The preconfigured cards are inexpensive and work great, without having to do it myself or running the risk of bricking my device or voiding my warranty.
I actually like the Nook OS and it's user interface. It's clean, attractive and straight forward and I usually use it. However, jelly bean gives me easier access to my Amazon apps and other sideloaded apps which are a pain to sideload from the Nook OS. Also, I find performance to sometimes be faster in jelly bean. |

I switched to Cyanogen instead of just rooting because it let me use Bluetooth tethering - I'm able to share my cell phone data connection with the tablet via Bluetooth instead of WiFi, and while that's slower it's much less demanding of the phone battery.
Doing the same with my phone as a WiFi hotspot would generally kill the battery in about an hour. |
