Does reregistering a Kindle remove private sideloaded books?

I want to give my Kindle Paperwhite 2 to someone with DRM-free sideloaded books that i added via the USB cable. They will need to reregister the Kindle. When they do this, will that remove the sideloaded books? (I want the sideloaded books to stay on the Kindle.)

No, deregistering does not delete content, but you need to be aware that it would be copyright infringement to give copies of books to someone else unless those books are in the public domain, or you have the permission of the copyright holder to do so.

I was able to confirm that deregistering does not delete sideloaded books by deregistering my unit and reregistering. All my books where still there.

Deregistering DOES wipe out all content from your Kindle.

I just read this thread and decided to deregister and register to another account. It was stupid of me for not backing up my Kindle but I lost all my content. Books, highlights, bookmarks, and book progress. I have all my books in Calibre but this is still very annoying.

I just wanted to report back so that no one else makes the same mistake. If in doubt, make a backup of the whole device.

If you can't afford to lose, make backups first.

Two years back, I deregistered my Kindle Oasis 2 with firmware 5.9.7, and then I was surprised that clear **everything** under /documents folder.

Deregistering wipes out all books residing on your Amazon account, including those you've sent by email or the Send To Kindle app. Deregistering DOES NOT wipe out books sideloaded by USB.

I just deregistered my Voyage a couple of weeks ago, before I sold it. All the books sideloaded from Calibre remained on it and I had to delete them manually.

Ahhh, the 7th anniversary necropost revival to this thread!

One would hope that deregistering would not wipe out content not owned by the entity you are deregistering from. However, this is Amazon we're dealing with, so all bets are off. I wouldn't poke the gorilla, even if others have done it before and survived. Backup everything first if you hope to keep any of it - that's reasonable advice for any device or computer.

That's because there is still no definite answer to that question, or Amazon keep changing their behavior. Some people report that sideloaded books remain, while others have experienced that they don't.

If you reset it after de-registering, all content, settings and personal information will be wipred and the kindle returned to factory settings. Highly recommended before selling your device.

Yes, I know, but in this case the buyer wanted to have my installed fonts and the font_ramp hack. That's why I didn't do a reset.
