PW1 firmware updated to 5.3.9

Here is what the update site says:

Hide Reading Progress Option
While reading, tap the bottom left of the screen to switch between four reading progress options, including Location in book, Time left in chapter, Time left in book, and None, which hides your reading progress from the bottom of the screen. To learn more, go to View Your Reading Progress.

Optimized PDF Performance
Increased stability for complex PDF files and shorter time to open documents.

Improved Homonym Lookup in Chinese and Japanese
When you look up a word that has multiple meanings for the same spelling (homonym), you can view a full list of the available definitions from within the dictionary definition window.

It is available at update cite.

I just loaded that update to my PW 2012 and it started updating by itself. That was a change from the past when we had to go to the menu and tap "update."

Just as an anecdote: My PW1 didn't do that. I was running 5.3.8.1. I had to click Update from the Settings menu. It is probably a feature of the later updates to auto-initiate upgrades.

Indeed, there is now the "None" option for Reading Progress for PW1, which will leave both the bottom left and right corners empty. This is an option not available in the 5.4.0 on PW2, which suggests maybe 5.4.1+ will get this for PW2 too. A welcome addition, but I'd love to get the basic Kindle progress bar option.

More interesting for PW1 owners is the question will 5.4.x eventually make it to PW1 and if so, with which features.

True. I notice that the "None" option is already in the Kindle for Android app as well. That is the app for non-Fire tablets/phones. Interestingly there is no Reading Progress at all in the iOS app yet.

FYI-- FW 5.3.9 appears to break the PW 1 Jailbreak! Don't install it if you have any hacks.

I wonder why PW1 and PW2 have different firmwares being very similar machines. Several features in PW1 are not available in PW2, which irritates me. The feature I miss the most is the ability of selecting different dictionaries from the definition box, not having this feature in PW2 is ridiculous.

What about PAGE NUMBER, which the PW2 has? They made an update to this functionality and didn't add page number? I fear this means the PW1 will never get it. I wonder why?

Remember not all USB/USB micro cables are equal. I have a half dozen in a drawer and some will power a Kindle but won't make it appear as a drive. I keep a Kindle cable separate because it will.

There is a reason but not being an engineer, I don't know what it is. I think someone said it had something to do with grounding.

I think the reason is that: some has only two power cables and some other has an extra two for data:

I have not done any sort of audit to know for certain, but the answer must be: YES.

Different GPU than on the i.MX508 series (among a lot of other things).
