Free/Bargain Nonfiction in November 2013

A thread for November.

We point out free and bargain nonfiction titles to each other. Please don't post any self-published books, and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast!

I just got the University of Chicago Press email for this month and I'm really excited to read it.

Sexy Orchids Make Lousy Lovers & Other Unusual Relationships by Marty Crump

Quote:
Vampire bats that regurgitate blood for roosting buddies. Mosquitoes that filch honeydew droplets from ants. Reptiles that enforce chastity on their lovers with copulatory plugs. Capuchin monkeys that use millipede secretions as mosquito repellent. The natural world is full of unusual relationships, and negotiation between life-forms striving to survive is evolution at its most diverse, entertaining, and awe-inspiring.
Unfortunately for many, it's a PDF this month.

Grrr.

To open your downloaded file, you'll need Adobe Flash and Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer. The link above will let you know if you're missing this software and should help you install it.

(If, for any reason, the link doesn't help with these installations as expected, Flash is available at: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/. Digital Editions is available at: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/#download.)

Please note: iPhone, iPod, and iPad readers: You will NOT need Flash. Please visit the download link on your iOS device in Safari. You will be able to open the ebook from there directly, into the Bluefire Reader app.
==

I wanted to read it on a Kindle Fire which needs exceptional efforts to install Flash.

You don't actually need Flash as such; Digital Editions for the PC requires Flash, but if you have another way to download and read books with Adobe DRM, that will work for this book as well. If you have Digital Editions on your computer and can transfer DRM books to a reader app on your Kindle Fire (or have Googled "Apprentice Alf"), you can read the book.

I haven't got Digital Editions on my PC, but I downloaded, installed and Adobe authorised BlueFire Reader on my Kindle Fire and so when I tapped download in the Silk Browser it then offered to handle the download which it did

So I never involved my PC or Flash at all.

Of course I already had the Overdrive App authorised but it refused to handle a PDF, hence BlueFire.

The God Particle: If the Universe Is the Answer, What Is the Question? by Leon Lederman is $2.99 at B&N and Amazon.

Quote:
In this extraordinarily accessible and enormously witty book, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Leon Lederman guides us on a fascinating tour of the history of particle physics. The book takes us from the Greeks' earliest scientific observations through Einstein and beyond in an inspiring celebration of human curiosity. It ends with the quest for the Higgs boson, nicknamed the God Particle, which scientists hypothesize will help unlock the last secrets of the subatomic universe. With a new preface by Lederman, The God Particle will leave you marveling at our continuing pursuit of the infinitesimal.

In "one of the clearest, most enjoyable new science books in years . . . (Lederman) explains the entire history of physics and cosmology. En route, you'll laugh so hard you won't realize how much you are learning" (San Francisco Chronicle). Line art throughout.

The ePub is an unproofed scan of a library book.

Includes the printed page header and footer interspaced with the text. And the even page numbers.

I'd be embarrassed to not offer this book for free.

While I haven't read this book for about 15 years now, I recall it being one of the clearest and funniest physics books I've ever read -- a great bargain at this price (showing at $2.51 at amazon US). Thanks for posting!

I haven't read this one yet, but I really enjoyed John Gribbin's books and I'm hoping this one's similar.
