Switch Library instead of Restart
When you create (or sometimes when you make a change to) a custom column (library specific setting) you are told that you need to restart for the change to take effect. This is not completely true as switching to another library and then later switching back to the library you made the change in, is also enough to have that change activated or take effect. Yet you still need to restart first before you can change settings again.
Could this be changed so it also clears the restart flag on library change? Since the only reason for the restart is to reload the library specific settings, the same occurs when switching libraries which does not require restarting. Last edited by At_Libitum; 10-30-2013 at 07:33 AM. |

That would require making the restart flag from a simple flag into a complex condition that knows exactly which circumstances can cause it to be cleared.
The fragility of that in a system as complex as calibre is too high. |

could you not simply reset the flag when the library switch is done then?
isn't a library switch in effect not the same as restarting with regards to library specific settings? I admit I only saw the effect it has on custom columns and the tag browser, changes which required a restart according to the prompt but also got activated when I switched back from another library. That's why I asked Last edited by At_Libitum; 10-30-2013 at 09:54 PM. |

In theory, sure. In practice not so much. calibre's GUI is very complex and stores state in lots of places. Furthermore, it evolves with time. Therefore, using a setting like that is just asking for trouble down the line.
