"Download Metadata" issues

Hello!

I'm not sure if this is a Calibre issue or an issue with the search engines it uses, but more and more often I get the error "Failed to find any books that match your search.." pop up when I use the "Download Metadata" feature. However, those books are in Amazon.com and have been for quite a while.

I'm using the 0.9.33 version, I don't know if this has been "fixed" (if it were a Calibre issue), or if it's still the same problem.

It never used to be this bad with previous versions, so that's why I'm wondering where the source could be...

Calibre is at v.1.7 right now. Try to update and see if the error goes away.

(Also a good time to backup, if you don't do it regularly...)

Hmm, I hate to upgrade right now, I'm in the midst of an 11,000 ebook cataloguing/culling process. (Why I start these things, I have no idea) I'm not unwilling, I'm just concerned in case I lose my elibrary with those 11000 ebooks in there - it took me 3 days of importing to get them in there.

I back up faithfully, I'm paranoid about losing stuff.

Thanks for the reply!

Calibre updats do many things.
Fixing (scraped) Metadata sources after a Host site changes is one of them.

Backups are good
Any data loss I have seen, has been My fault and not an update issue.

Note: there has be occasional Setting corruption , so it does not hurt to have a TEXT file copy of a complex template or rule to paste back if needed

Fair position, but until you upgrade the problem you described will continue.

Good Luck.

...Yes, middle of an inventory is NOT the time to experiment on a production base.

What I'd do would be:
  • 1) Create a new, test user (OS-level)
  • 2) Install Calibre 1.7 in that user's $HOME/bin/Calibre (or your OS equivalent), and any addon you have
  • 2b) Copy your own $HOME/.calibre (or %APPDATA%\Calibre, or... I have no idea where it's at on OSX) settings to that temporary user. Not strictly necessary I guess, but the closest to your prod environment, the better
  • 3) Copy your base to the temp user's $HOME/library
  • 4) Point 1.7 to that copy
  • 5) Test to your heart's content
  • 6) Determine, after the tests, if 1.7 is worth upgrading
  • 7) Back to your normal user, backup, upgrade (or not), remove your test user.

Hop, done.

I think it'd take me and my ~1300 books about an hour or two. But probably more, because I have the unfortunate habit of being easily distracted by new toys, and 1.7 compared to 0.9.33 would be an awfully distracting toy...

Let calibre back up all those books to disk -- overnight -- then update. Nevertheless, you shouldn't get a corrupted database just because you start using a newer program to manipulate the database.

I have only ever had my database get corrupted twice -- both times I stupidly ran calibre from two different locations simultaneously on the same database.

And I update every week faithfully.
