What happens to the returns?

I was wondering what happens to returned Kobo eReaders. Does anyone know? Can they be refurbished? Has anyone seen Kobo sell refurbished eReaders in the past?

Just asking.

One friend who had an issue with her Touch a while back got a refurbished unit as the replacement from Kobo. So far, that unit has been working for her without issues.

David

Thanks David. I suppose it will be awhile before any refurbished Auras turn up. I like referbs. A device that was refurbished costs a little less and will have been gone through by a technician to correct anything that might be wrong.

I don't know of any electronic device that didn't have a good many defects in the shake out of the first manufacturing runs: that's where refurbished units come from--returned new units. They are not at all like used devices which will suffer from wear. Just wondered if Kobo has a track record of selling these attractive devices.

There was Geeks.com, but they have given up their online store. They often had refurbished electronics, ereaders included. Don't know exactly what caused their departure but there was some mention of being unable to compete with "the everything store", not sure but maybe they meant Amazon? Newegg? Kobo might be using some Canadian outlet.

Luck;
Ken

I think Kobo would be the place to find new, refurbished Auras, the ones from the first run that were returned.

I've had bad luck getting used products from Amazon. The last two, both were iPods, had 10 and 12 hour batteries. They worked but were worn out. To be fair to Amazon, they were sold as "Used" not "Refurbished".

Before the Touch came out Kobo in Canada was selling reworked Kobo Wifi Readers (the one with the rubber D-pad). At the time the price was about half that of a new one and as I recall there was an issue with colour availability, some may have gotten white or black, however some people also reported that there readers were new, and not reworked ones. Since then I have not seem them offer up anymore refurbished units on their site.

They've probably wised up to the idea that they make a lot more off a fully priced Kobo than a half priced refurb. Plus, they probably have enough name recognition for people to want a newer model Kobo now rather than buying whatever they can get as a refurb. It probably makes sense to keep the clean refurbs to use as in-warranty replacements.

That said, I have nothing against good refurbs. As has been said above, a good refurb may be better than a "New" production model. At least the refurb has been tested, most new devices are untested as QC only pulls one in a thousand or ten thousand, etc., as may be the case volume-wise.

Over the years I've bought everything from refurbished laptops to a refurbished wire welder, never been stuck, not even once.
