Calibre Portable for Android?

Why not write a version of Calibre Portable for Android tablets such as the Samsung Note and Tab series? They can address up the 64 gb micro SD and would be perfect for a Calibre Remote aplication.

The Tab does not have enough RAM
SD cards are storage, You can use Calibre Companion and Load it up from Calibre which has the horsepower to do conversions .

The UI on CC is nice and can link to a reader of your choice (I use Moon + Pro)

Please use the forums correctly. Calibre questions belong in the Calibre forum.

I agree with the suggestion to use Calibre Companion. It is the perfect solution to combine Android and calibre.

I have a N7 and I'm not sure that calibre could be ported effectively. Calibre's interface is fairly complex - with lots of functionality accessed through context menus, drop downs, etc. Trying to mimic these interface elements in Touch might result in substantial, but less than graceful, changes to interface element size, position and function.

Besides, I'm not sure that I would want to use calibre on a small screen device even assuming it had the processing power to handle the task. The workflow in calibre depends on being able to do a lot of typing to enter/correct metadata. All of which require a decent keyboard to interact with at speed in a reliable manner. Soft keyboards are not really up to this kind of extended usage regardless if they're swipe, standard or predictive.

Other than data entry, calibre is used to find, load and read ebooks. These tasks don't rely heavily on the keyboard. However, Calibre Companion excels at performing these tasks in Touch.

If I had access to calibre on Android I would use it, but the fact is that calibre is developed cross platform with a single set of tools. If the tools used to develop calibre expand to include Android then calibre may be available on Android.

I believe at this point the question is moot.

Then let's have a special version of Calibre light for Android.
It mainly needs to be able to import ebooks and perform conversions with "essential" plugins. These are the functions that would be most useful on a portable platform like Android. Useful if someone is travelling with only their tablet, for example.
The full slate of features would still be available, if needed, of course, on the original computer-based version.

It seems clear to me that there's a demand for this and it would be very useful for many people. I have no idea how technically feasible it is - but I'm sure Kovid has thought about it at some point. Hopefully he'll see this thread and weigh-in on this.

Calibre is open source; if you think there's a demand for something, the way to make something happen is for you to do it, or organise a project for others to do it if you don't have the skills yourself. Sitting there and waiting for someone else to do it for you is unlikely to achieve anything.

I asked Kovid this about 18 months ago, and he said he wasn't interested in it at that time.
